    • A system is described for displaying several lines of electrocardiographic (ECG) signals on a cathode ray tube screen for observation, analysis and selection of those portions of the signals which indicate abnormalities of heart rhythm and cardiac events of interest to the diagnostician or trained observer. The ECG signals may be recorded at real time but are inputted to the system at much greater than real time. The system provides the display of the signal portions which were recorded consecutively, each on a separate vertically displayed line. In the system the greater than real time ECG signals are converted into consecutive bytes of data and transferred through a memory, which may be part of a computer, to a bulk storage unit such as a magnetic disc unit. The data from the disc is transferred to the display by way of the memory such that the display is continuously refreshed while the lines of ECG signals are under observation. Together with the ECG signals, other alphanumeric data, such as the time of day when the signals were recorded, patient name, heart rate, cardiac condition, and other pertinent information, may also be displayed simultaneously with the lines of ECG signals by the use of the memory and storage means to receive and hold such data. As consecutive sets of lines of the ECG signals are presented for display, sections of each line containing abnormalities and cardiac events of interest may be identified by an observer and transferred through the memory to the storage unit. Hard copy of the selected sections may be obtained as by a readout means such as a plotter which is responsive to data corresponding to the selected sections. The selected data may be applied to the readout means upon completion of the display of the entire long-term electrocardiographic recording and after operator review of the selected sections.

    • A heart rate analyzer responsive to the R wave of successive ECG complexes of a patient. The intervals between successive ECG complexes are continuously counted and summed for a first number of successive complexes. First electrical representations of the average values of the intervals are generated over the first number of complexes, the number being no greater than two. The second average of the same intervals is generated for a second number of successive numbers of complexes greater than the first and electrical representations thereof are produced. These electrical representations are trapped and at least a maximum value of the first representation and a minimum value of the second representation are held. These maximum and minimum values are then converted to corresponding minimum and maximum heart rates respectively. Lastly each R wave signal generated over a predetermined period of time is counted thereby providing an indication of the average heart rate.

    • A multi-speed ECG magnetic tape scanning device for processing and observing in a relatively short interval of time large quantities of ECG signals from two pairs of ECG leads. The ECG information is recorded on a miniature recorder which the patient carries to record the information for a long period of time, such as 24 hours. The recorder includes a built-in clock with a visible display. The recorder also includes an event marker, which is activated by the patient when the patient experiences an event. The play-back of the ECG information is in real time or at multiple high speed play-back speeds of 30, 60 and 120 times real time. During play-back at high speed, a multi-speed multi-channel paper writer reproduces analog trend data, digital printed data and event marking. The trend information is usually heart rate and ST segment level, so as to produce a scanning of an entire 24 hour information tape in as short a period as 12 minutes. The tape scanning device can run on trend to print out trend to the end of the tape, and then stop automatically. Alternatively, the tape scanning device can run on trend to the end of the tape and then automatically cycle to the beginning of the tape to print-out trend and periodically slow the tape down to real time for the print-out of predetermined events in real time. After each print-out in real time, the playback always goes back to the originally selected trend speed for the continuation of the trend print-out. Various short events may be used to slow the read-out to real time, such as an event marking on the tape which has been activated by the patient. Also, any preselected abnormalities in heart function such as abnormal VE's, SVE's, ST level, rapid heart beat, slow heart rate, etc., may be used to print-out in real time. An arrhythmia computer detects and digitally displays the number of premature ventricular contractions (VE) and superventricular ectopic beats (SVE) and actuates the event markers on a paper writer when the arrhythmia occurrences exceed a predetermined number of occurrences during a predetermined time interval. The event marking may also be used to control the slow down during trend read-out to print out the ECG signals in real time to show the arrhythmia occurrences. The arrhythmia computer includes the ability to select one or a number of parameters to determine the occurrence of an arrhythmia. These parameters may be paired beats, prematurity, width or amplitude.

    • A system for ambulatory monitoring and subsequent analysis and evaluation of pacemaker performance includes a recorder module which detects pacemaker spikes and in response to each spike generates a signal having a waveform compatible with commericially-available ambulatory ECG recorders, to permit ECG signals to be recorded in one channel of the recorder while simultaneously the pacemaker spike signals are recorded in another channel. The magnetic tape on which the signals are recorded is played back at 120 times the recording speed, typically, on a commercially-available playback analyzer which presents the pacemaker and ECG signals as separate outputs. The system further includes an analysis module connected to the playback unit and receiving from it the ECG signals and the pacemaker spike signals. The analysis module has counters which accumulate the number of paced beats and of fusion beats. The analysis module also includes circuits for sensing manifestations of pacemaker malfunction. When malfunction is sensed, the analysis module reduces the playback speed to facilitate study by an operator and activates a visual alarm. The conditions sensed include: failure-to-sense, failure-to-capture, and abnormal bradycardia.
