    • The present invention pertains to a cautery dissector. The cautery dissector is comprised of a cautery blade and a handle member having a sheath portion and a device for adjustably retracting the cautery blade into the sheath portion. The cautery dissector also comprises a device for conducting electrical current to the tissues of the patient. Heat is generated within the tissue by communication between the cautery blade and the electrical dissecting unit. Preferably, the cautery dissector includes a suction system having a suction opening disposed adjacent to the cautery blade. Preferably, the cautery blade retracts into the sheath portion through a sheath opening which scrapes accumulated material from the cautery blade such that when the cautery blade is retracted into the sheath portion, the suction opening is unobstructed for suction. Preferably, a scraper member is disposed within the sheath member to assist in scraping accumulated material from the cautery blade. The present invention is also a method of cautery dissecting. The method includes the steps of performing surgery on a patient with a cautery dissector and retracting a blade of the cautery dissector through a scraping member of the cautery dissector to remove accumulated matter from the blade. Preferably, during the performing step, there is the step of maintaining suction through a suction opening of the cautery dissector which is disposed adjacent to the blade to remove smoke and debris.

    • An inexpensive, lightweight apparatus and method is provided for removing coagulum and other debris from the tip of cautery blades and needles during use. The cleaner comprises a pad having a lower compressible portion and an upper fibrous abrasive portion which is mounted to a non-compressible base. The apparatus can be attached to a surgical drape or other accessible surface to permit cleaning using only one hand to manipulate the cauterizing instrument. The upper abrasive portion contains one or more elongated slits each of which has opposing abrasive walls and an abrasive floor. Cautery blades are cleaned by pressing the edge of a blade down between two opposing walls and drawing the blade toward the opposite end of the elongated slit. Cautery needles are cleaned by pushing them into, and then withdrawing them from, the upper abrasive portion.

    • A laser therapy system and method of cutting and vaporizing a tissue body which includes a fiber optic which is inserted into the lumen of a catheter and operable between an extended position wherein a distal end portion of the fiber optic is positioned to cut and vaporize a tissue body and a retracted position wherein the fiber optic is received within the lumen of the catheter. The catheter incorporates at a distal end portion a means for removing attached tissue fragments and the like from the distal end portion of the fiber optic such that tissue fragments stuck to the distal end portion of the fiber optic can be removed while the catheter and fiber remain at the treatment site. This improved system eliminates the need to completely remove the fiber optic during the cutting and vaporization procedure in order to remove the fragments and debris.

    • A disposable cauterizing (electro-surgical) instrument (pencil) is packaged in sterile condition in a sealed envelope. The instrument has a reversible electrode having a narrow needle at one end and a broad flat blade at the other. The handle has an electrical connector consisting of two flat leaves which will accept either end of the electrode and establish electrical contact therewith, the opposite end extending out of the handle in working position. The holder has a sheath which receives the electrode and handle and has a flange which has two slits for attachment of the instrument cord to the holder, a hole to hang, clamp or pin the tab to a drape or other available support and electrode cleaners of two types. One type cleaner is an upstanding boss formed with a V-shaped notch. The other cleaner is a broad tab surface hinged to the flange formed with serrations or abrasive surface.
