    • An electric immersion heating element has an elongate, metal-sheathed, electrically insulated, resistance heating portion (1) engaged at its ends in bores formed in an element head (2) which may be formed of a synthetic plastics material, a heat transfer element (8) formed of a high thermal conductivity material extends from a heated part of the resistance heating portion adjacent one of its ends through the element head to enable the element temperature to be sensed from the opposite side of the head, and a tubular enclosure (7) extends from the element head (2) and surrounds the part of the resistance heating portion of the element. The element construction enables dry-boil protection and automatic switch-off on boiling to be achieved by use of a single thermal sensor coupled to the heat transfer element (8) since the steam generated in the enclosure when water boils causes water to be expelled from the enclosure thereby mimicing a dry boil situation.

    • A thermally-responsive electrical control for an electric heater of a water boiling container includes a switch-on-dry protector switch unit electrically connected with the cold leads of the heater and having a thermally sensitive switch means effective, in use, to interrupt the electrical supply to the heater should the element overheat through being switched-on when the container is dry. A removable steam-sensitive unit is mounted on the protector switch unit and includes an overcenter spring mechanism and a thermally-responsive actuator for the mechanism. The actuator of the said steam sensitive unit is arranged to impinged by vapor or steam issuing from the outlet of a passage leading to the interior of the container, and the electrical parts of the control are shielded from such vapor or steam. A mechanical link is provided between the overcenter spring mechanism and the switch means of the protector switch unit so that tripping of the overcenter spring mechanism by the actuator serves to operate the switch means of the protector switch unit. The steam-sensitive unit is optional and may be deleted to allow the switch-on-dry unit alone to control the heater.

    • A control circuit of a programmable coffee maker includes an input unit for inputting a preset brewing time, a heater controller for controlling electrical connection between an electric heating device and a power supply, a sensor unit for providing a cancel signal when temperature at a supply pipe connected to a water reservoir and heated by the heating device reaches a predetermined critical temperature, and a processor having an internal clock with a current time output. The processor controls the heater controller to make electrical connection between the heating device and the power supply when the preset brewing time coincides with the current time output, and cancels the preset brewing time and controls the heater controller to break the electrical connection between the heating device and the power supply after the processor receives the cancel signal from the sensor unit.
