    • Apparatus for transferring successive wire comb binders from a first station, at which the binders arrive by moving lengthwise, to a second station, to which successive binders are advanced by moving sideways, has a pusher which advances successive binders along a path wherein the binders slide relative to one or more guide rails. The pusher cooperates with a braking device to change the orientation of successive binders during advancement toward the second station. The braking device can employ one or more magnets if the binders contain a magnetizable material, and/or one or more friction generating units which slow down or arrest the adjacent portions of successive binders. A mobile abutment at the second station determines the extent to which the orientation of successive binders can be changed and positions successive reoriented binders for removal of successive binders from the second station by a reciprocable plunger or another suitable conveyor.

    • A tool which loops the end portion of the outermost convolution of a spiral wire binder around the neighboring next-to-the-outermost convolution while the convolutions of the binder extend through the perforations of a stack of paper sheets and the binder is located in a preselected position has a knife which trims the outermost convolution and thereupon bends the end portion of the outermost convolution to a position of parallelism with and proximity to a stationary surface. A looping device which is mounted at the forward end of a rotary reciprocable shaft is thereupon caused to engage the bent end portion in response to forward movement of the shaft and to loop the bent end portion by moving it along the surface and around the neighboring convolution in response to rotation of the shaft. The shaft is rotatable and reciprocable and the knife is movable by a set of coaxial cams which complete one revolution in order to effect trimming of the outermost convolution, to thereupon effect bending of the end portion of the trimmed convolution and to ultimately effect looping of the bent end portion. The cams are rotatable by a rack and pinion drive through the medium of a one-way clutch.

    • Apparatus for stacking pads with spiral binders has a reciprocable and pivotable turn-around device which inverts each second pad of a file of equidistant pads before the pads reach a stacking platform. At the stacking station, the pads are arrested by an adjustable stop which locates inverted pads in a first position and the non-inverted pads in a second position so that the binders of successive pads in a growing stack are located at the opposite sides of the stack. The turn-around device is arrested in response to detection of the absence of pads in the path along which the pads move toward the stacking platform by a photocell which further transmits signals to the mechanism for moving the stop so that the absence of one or more pads does not affect the array of pads in the stack on the platform. A level detector monitors the height of the stack on the platform and transmits signals for stepwise lowering of the platform. The number of pads in successive stacks is counted and the counter transmits signals which actuate a device for removing fully grown stacks from the platform.

    • Apparatus for lifting successive topmost stacks of large paper sheets and the panels beneath such stacks off a pile of superimposed stacks and panels has one or more separating units each employing a roller which is caused to bear upon the topmost sheet of the topmost stack of the pile and a sword which is aligned with or is disposed at a level slightly below the topmost panel of the pile and is caused to penetrate into the pile so as to lift the topmost stack with the topmost panel preparatory to automatic shifting of the lifted stack and panel sideways into a processing machine. The distance between the lowermost portion of the roller and the plane of the sword is adjustable to permit for subdivision of piles having thicker or thinner stacks. Any sheets which are lifted with a panel and belong to the stack below the lifted panel are stripped off the lifted panel by a continuously driven friction wheel which enters the gap that is formed by the sword. A hold-down device is employed to press upon the stack below the gap during transfer of the lifted stack and panel into the processing machine.

    • Stacks of marginally perforated paper sheets are assembled with prefabricated C-shaped binding strips at timely spaced intervals by moving two or more stacks simultaneously to a binding station so that the perforations of their sheets form a row, moving at the same intervals a strand of coherent strips lengthwise and cutting groups of discrete strips from the leader of the strand at a severing station which is remote from the binding station, transferring successive groups from the severing station to the binding station including moving the strips of each group sideways at least once and spreading the strips of each group by moving at least some strips of the group axially and away from the neighboring strips, and inserting the strips of a group into and closing the strips of such group in the perforations of stacks of sheets at the binding station. The apparatus can make stationery articles with one-piece binders or with so-called skip binders consisting of two or more spaced-apart coaxial binders. The devices which close the strips at the binding station also serve to deliver the groups of strips to the binding station, either from the spreading station or from an intermediate station which is located between the spreading and binding stations.

    • A machine for converting straightened wire into an elongated undulate comb-like product wherein hairpin-shaped prongs alternate with webs which extend in the longitudinal direction of the product has two carriers which are rotatable about parallel axes and have neighboring end faces defining a forming channel. Each carrier supports a group of equidistant tools which are reciprocable in parallelism with and are equidistant from the axis of the respective carrier. The carriers are alternately indexed in opposite directions, and the wire is fed into the channel by a pivotable portion of a wire feeding unit so that it is alternately engaged by successive tools of the one and the other carrier. The tools are shifted into the channel before they engage the wire, they remain in engagement with the wire while the respective carriers dwell between successive indexing movements, and they are thereupon retracted from the channel not later than when the respective carriers are indexed again whereby the tools are automatically separated from the wire. Levers are provided to urge the wire against the tools in the channel.

    • A flexible web which is caused to run through a cross cutter to be severed at regular intervals in order to yield a series of discrete sections is engaged by a pair of holders which attract the web by suction immediately behind the severing plane when the cutter severs the web. The holders advance with the web and thereafter with the freshly formed section to prevent changes in orientation of the sections on their way to a removing station where they are expelled from the path of the web by block-shaped commodities which are draped into the respective sections. The surfaces of the holders are small and the length of each holder is a minute fraction of the length of a section, as considered in the longitudinal direction of the web. The holders are mounted on endless toothed belt or chain conveyors which advance the holders along an endless path having an elongated reach extending adjacent to the path of movement of the web and its sections toward, past and beyond the severing station.
