    • A fluid pump for medical applications. The pump includes a flexible cassette containing two pump chambers of differing volume, each chamber having a dedicated piston. The first piston pushes fluid from the first chamber to the second, and the second piston pushes fluid from the second chamber and out of the pump. Three valves are coordinated with the action of the pistons to control fluid flow into and out of the pump chambers by applying and releasing pressure to and from specific points of the flexible cassette. A control system controls the operation of the pistons and valves and directs the pistons to be advanced according to a time-varying velocity profile. The first pump chamber passively fills and then rapidly expels the collected fluid into the second chamber at low pressure. The second chamber, once filled, expels the fluid downstream at high pressure, producing a pulsatile pressure profile.

    • The improved balloon catheter includes a first tubular segment, which has multiple zones of differing malleability along its length. The catheter further includes a coaxially aligned hypotube formed of a malleable material, which is positioned within the lumen of the first tubular segment and extends from the distal end of the first tubular segment. In one embodiment the hypotube runs the length of the first tubular segment; while in another embodiment, the hypotube runs along only a portion of the length of the first tubular segment. A portion of the outer circumferential surface of the hypotube is permanently affixed and sealed to an inner circumferential surface of the first tubular segment in the vicinity of the distal end of the first tubular segment. The outer circumference of the distal end of the first tubular segment is gently tapered along its length so as to smoothly transition to the circumference of the hypotube. The hypotube terminates with an atraumatic tip and includes a balloon dilator affixed near the tip. An aperture near the tip of the hypotube fluidly connects the interior of the balloon with the lumen of the hypotube enabling the balloon to selectively expand and contract.

    • The present invention relates to a retrograde cardioplegia catheter for the delivery of a cardioplegia solution to a patient's heart during open heart surgery. The catheter includes a flexible, elongated cannula having a proximal and a distal end. The cannula includes at least two lumens, the primary lumen being utilized to deliver cardioplegia solution. Typical of retrograde catheters, a sealing member is positioned and secured about the distal end of the cannula. In contrast to conventional catheters, however, the sealing member is comprised of (i) a thin-walled membrane that defines an interior chamber and (ii) a compressible, resilient form positioned within such chamber to fully support the membrane. The resilient form is in an expanded state when relaxed. The resilient form of the present invention enables the distribution of a consistent, definable force across the surface of the semi-rigid sealing member, whereby the resilient form empowers the sealing member of the present invention to overcome migratory tendencies of air- and fluid-filled sealing members typical of conventional retrograde cardioplegia catheters.

    • An infusion pump incorporates a cassette formed by bonding of two substantially flat sheets. The fluid to be infused to the patient comes into contact only with the cassette. The cassette includes first and second flexible sheets which define a pumping chamber therebetween. The infusion pump is provided with a pumping member having a hub and a plurality of petal-shaped sections extending radially outward therefrom and pivotal relative thereto. A stepping motor can be operated to move the pumping member against the second flexible sheet to decrease the volume of the pumping chamber and pump fluid to the patient. A load cell monitors the force exerted by the stepping motor on the hub. An outlet restriction value is electronically controlled by a second stepping motor in response to the pressure sensed by the load cell to control pumping to a predetermined pressure. The pressure can be selectively varied which permits the use of a low pressure at low flow rates to decrease the time necessary to detect an occlusion in the output lines.
