    • A fastener is provided for fastening together overlapping panels made from relatively soft materials, such as fiber reinforced composite materials, substantially without damage to the panels. The fastener comprises a generally tubular fastener body received within the openings of the panels. The fastener body has an enlarged body head for engaging the outer panel, an annular sidewall extending through the panel openings, and an endwall at the inner end of the fastener body. A plug having a tapered inner nose is positioned within the upper region of the fastener body in abutting contact with the body head and contiguous sidewall, and an annular sleeve is positioned within the lower region of the fastener body between the plug and endwall. During setting of the fastener, the sleeve deforms over the tapered nose and laterally expands the contiguous sidewall outwardly into a fully set condition in overlying contact with the outer surface of the inner panel.

    • A blind fastener, producing a large blind side bulb, and including a locking ring to hold the fastener in a secured position against stresses. A collapsible barrel segment is disposed on the blind side between the end of the body portion and the head of the pull stem to effect the expansion of the body portion on the blind side. The barrel resists collapsing under loads sufficient to expand and flare the body portion of the fastener to produce the desired large bulb but collapses upon satisfactory flaring having been accomplished. The collapsible barrel, being collapsible along an angle, makes the fastener particularly well-adapted for fastening non-parallel surfaces.

    • A multiple sleeve blind fastener has a relatively large bearing surface on the blind side of the material in which the fastener is to be mounted, such as the skin of an aircraft or the like. The fastener includes a nut on the driving side of the mating hole in the skin into which the fastener is to be inserted. The nut is threaded onto a core bolt which extends into the mating hole and terminates in a head on the blind side. A plurality of sleeves are rotatably mounted on the core bolt between the head and the nut, the sleeves being disposed on the blind side when the fastener is inserted into the mating hole. The nut includes a tapered body portion which also extends through the mating hole from the driving side into the blind side thereto. In operation, when the core bolt is tightened, the first sleeve rides onto the tapered body portion of the nut and the successive sleeves ride onto and over the preceding sleeves thereby forming a relatively large bearing surface on the walls surrounding the mating hole, this surface depending upon the total number of sleeves and thicknesses thereof.

    • A flush valve is provided for opening and closing a drain connecting a toilet bowl to a waste holding tank maintained at a partial vacuum. The flush valve is located external to the drain and comprises a pinch or nip mechanism surrounding a flexible section of the drain and an electro-mechanically operated actuator for moving the pinch mechanism to close the drain by pinching it shut or to open the drain by pulling it apart. The actuator includes a motor for moving a piston in opposite directions, and a cylinder having one end connected to the pinch mechanism and another end containing an enclosure. The piston is retained and reciprocable a limited distance within the enclosure, and a spring is interposed within the enclosure to provide biasing means between the piston and the cylinder. The spring has sufficient stiffness relative to the force needed to shut the flexible drain section, in the absence of an obstruction, so that the flexible drain section may be fully closed without compression of the spring by the piston. However, when the flexible drain section is nipped shut, or if an obstruction is encountered, the spring will be compressed within the enclosure by the piston, causing operation of a switch to deactivate the motor and prevent motor stalling and damage to the valve. A manually operable shut-off flush valve also is provided, comprising a plate slidable through a coupling in the drain line to bring an opening in the plate in or out of registration with the drain line to open or close it, respectively.

    • A blind fastener comprising:a nut with an axial bore therethrough, a bolt extending through the nut with a sleeve encircling the bolt between the head of the bolt and the nut body, and a stop ring provided on a screw threaded portion of the bolt, the bolt having a break groove therein, between the nut body and the bolt head. As the bolt is advanced upwardly during installation, the stop ring abuts the terminal end of the nut body. This sudden resistance to further travel causes the screw threaded portion to fracture at the break groove thus providing a clean break at the break groove substantially filling a cavity in the nut head thereby increasing the strength of the installed fastener and eliminating any need for shaving off the broken-off screw threaded portion.

    • A method of forming wire harnesses and a cylindrical body pin assembly for connection to a peg board of the type used to form such harnesses is disclosed. The pin assembly comprises a cylindrical pin body and a cylindrical drive nut that are rotated relative to each other to axially move a pair of wire fingers protruding from one end of the pin body. The fingers are received within a hole in the peg board and are moved axially over a spreader disposed between them to separate the fingers and cause an enlarged shoulder on the fingers to abut against the peg board. After a selected number of pin assemblies have been installed in the peg board, wires may be wound around them to form the harness. The outer cylindrical surfaces of the pin body and drive nut are substantially equal in diameter to provide relatively straight, smooth sidewalls. This allows rapid installation and removal of the pin assembly by hand-held or robotic installation tools and, further, prevents the completed harness from catching on the pin assemblies during removal from the peg board, which could cause damage to the harness.
