    • An insertion tool for an intraocular lens including a hollow barrel, a rigid annular tube extending from the distal end of the barrel, the stylet for reciprocating within the barrel and the rigid tube, an actuator extending through the side wall of the barrel and connected to the stylet to permit the user to move the stylet back and forth within the barrel. A paddle is attached to the distal end of the stylet. The intraocular lens is loaded into the paddle and then the paddle and the lens are retracted into the rigid tube for insertion into the eye through a small incision. The paddle unfolds the lens as it is retracted into the tube. When the distal end of the instrument is placed into the eye, the paddle and lens are ejected from the tube so that the lens may be deposited within the eye.

    • An optic for an intraocular lens with finished, molded radii on the anterior and posterior edges of the peripheral surface of the optic. The optic has a thin central optical zone and a surrounding annular ring having sufficient material to support haptics. The ring is thicker than the optical zone and, thus, recesses the posterior surface of the optical zone to provide a capsulotomy space. The present novel optic is produced by novel molding pins which are shaped to provide the finished molded radii on the edges of the optic so that the optic requires little or no post-molding finishing or polishing other than the degating and deflashing.

    • A surgical instrument to facilitate the insertion and allow better control of the superior haptic of an intraocular lens into the capsular bag of the eye. The instrument includes a hollow cannula with a beveled distal tip and a tapered slot extending proximally from the distal tip of the cannula. A stylet slides freely within the cannula and has a distal tip beveled at an angle corresponding to the bevel of the distal tip of the cannula. A handle is provided for supporting the cannula and the stylet and includes a mechanism for advancing the stylet distally to align the beveled distal tips of the cannula and the stylus to form a plane which resolves the forces exerted by the resilient haptic in a direction which urges the haptic into the capsular bag.

    • An artificial intraocular lens designed for mounting within the anterior chamber of a patient's eye is disclosed. A substantially circularly shaped lens body which is refractive to light is provided with a pair of loops and a stave. The stave which is made of an elastic material such as polypropylene is fixedly mounted into an aperture in the lens body. The stave is provided with a keeper member on one side of a free end, the keeper member pointing away from an adjacent loop which is mounted to the same hemicircular segment of the lens as the stave. The opposite side of the stave provides a continuous substantially planar surface from the lens body to the free end of the stave. The loops are inserted behind the iris of the eye, and a surgical incision is made in the iris to permit the stave to be lead therethrough. The stave is capable of being bent until its free end traverses the loop, and as the bending force is released the keeper member engages the loop thereby fixedly positioning the lens in the eye. The opposite side of the free end is capable of assisting in the insertion of the keeper member by camming against the loop.

    • An insertion guide for aiding the insertion of the superior haptic of an intraocular lens into the capsular bag of the eye during intraocular surgery. The guide is made of a thin, flexible material and has a body portion and a flap portion connected by an integral connecting portion which permits the flap to move from the first position folded against the body portion to a second position where the flap is disposed at an acute angle to the body portion so that the flap will act as a backstop to guide the superior haptic of an intraocular lens into the capsular bag. The present invention also relates to the method of inserting an intraocular lens using this guide.
