    • An air-cooled internal combustion engine is provided with noise reducing means without increasing space requirements. A blower is provided to direct cooling air to at least one engine wall, for example a cylinder wall, and an engine accessory such as a fuel tank, which is needed in any event, forms a conduit to convey cooling air away from the engine wall. The cooling air path is lined with noise absorbing material, such as rock wool, held in position by a foraminous sheet. Where the blower impeller is rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft, similar noise reducing means can be provided on the shaft on the downstream side, the upstream side, or both, of the impeller.

    • A piston engine of the type in which opposed pistons drivingly engage a shaft between the pistons by engagement with cam parts fixed on the shaft.     • In an injection internal combustion engine having a fuel injection pump, wherein the fuel passes by gravity flow from a supply container through an admission conduit to the injection pump, at least one return flow conduit separate from the admission conduit is provided for superfluous fuel which has entered the pump which has not been injected, this return conduit leading from the injection pump to the supply container, and being equipped with a valve which is preferably of the non-return type, but which, when it is in its seated position, allows a small flow of fuel between the return flow conduit and the injection pump. The superfluous or non-injected fuel thus does not pass back into the admission conduit. The valve construction may be of various types so long as it permits the small flow of fuel when the valve member is in its seated or relatively closed position.

    • A decompression device for an internal combustion engine in which the control parts which open and close the exhaust valves of the combustion chambers include a rocking lever acting on the valve. The decompression device includes an eccentric bearing on which the rocking lever is freely mounted, rotation of the eccentric bearing thus moving the axis of the rocking lever to prevent full closing of the exhaust valve, that is, provide decompression of the chamber.     • In an internal combustion engine, the engine casing has segmental flanges defining one or more annular guideways extending generally at right angles from the camshaft. At least one correspondingly annular segmental element is slidably disposed in each guideway such that one end thereof bears against the cam and the other end provides a seat for an associated valve push rod. Reciprocation of the element along the annular guideway actuates the push rod, and hence the valve. The segmental element may include an oil reservoir which receives oil from a duct or reservoir in the casing or flanges, and conducts the oil to an oil duct in the push rod.

    • In a fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines, a reciprocable piston injects fuel on each compression stroke. The cylinder in which the piston reciprocates has an overflow port which is controlled by at least one control edge of the piston so as to effect injection during the portion of the compression stroke when the overflow port is closed. The beginning and/or end of injection are variably regulated relative to the compression stroke by a setting member which varies the stroke of the piston relative to the overflow port, and hence the elapsed time between the beginning of the compression stroke and the beginning and/or end of the injection.
