    • A method and apparatus are provided for receiving a packet stream having fixed length packets. Data carried in the packet stream is selectively processed for output to a computer. A packet identifier filter selects particular packets from the recovered packet stream. A computer disk controller receives the packets selected by the filter and manages the transfer of packet data from the packets to and from a buffer. A data bus is coupled to the disk controller for communicating the packet data from the buffer to the computer. A data compression stage prior to the disk controller compresses packets from the recovered packet stream in order to provide a gap between data carried by successive packets to be provided by the disk controller. In this manner, a low cost disk controller chip can be used to control the buffering of data in a cable or satellite television modem that provides, e.g., Internet access.

    • Apparatus processes mixed YUV and color palettized video signals for display on an interlaced NTSC or PAL television receiver by storing first and second fields of one or more sprites in a graphic memory. Each sprite is stored as YUV or color palettized data and given a priority. A higher priority sprite overwrites pixel data of sprites of a lower priority when sprites overlap. First and second adjacent horizontal lines of pixel data in the first and second fields, respectively, are concurrently stored in respective first and second double buffers of a pixel assembly buffer during each line period. A delay buffer and the first and second double buffers generate first, second, and third adjacent horizontal lines, respectively, of pixel data at the output of the pixel assembly buffer while third and fourth adjacent horizontal lines of pixel data are inputted to the first and second double buffers. A convolving means receives the first, second, and third output signals from the pixel assembly buffer and generates therefrom an output signal providing a weighted average for a central pixel of a predetermined matrix of pixel data for transmission to the television receiver when a sprite is included in a pixel area of the television receiver. A live video signal is transmitted to the display of the television receiver when no sprite is included in a pixel area of the television receiver.

    • Secure point-to-point communication of information to specific terminals is provided via a shared network. Far in advance of the establishment of an information session with a particular one of a plurality of terminals, a unique session identifier is securely delivered to the terminal by a highly secure entity. Information to be provided to the terminal is subsequently encrypted under the session identifier of that terminal by an insecure connection manager. The encrypted information is inserted into designated locations in a signal multiplex. The signal multiplex is transmitted over a portion of the network serving the terminal that is to receive the information. The terminal is informed of the designated locations of the encrypted information in the signal multiplex and of a transmission frequency at which the signal multiplex is carried on the network portion. The terminal tunes to the transmission frequency to locate the signal multiplex, recovers the encrypted information from the designated locations in the multiplex, and then decrypts the information using the terminal's unique session identifier.

    • A power-out reset circuit includes reference voltage and current generators to generate a reference voltage and a reference current which are essentially independent of temperature variations over a useful temperature range, a delay/disable circuit, over and under voltage detectors and output logic circuitry. This circuit detects when the voltage level of a supply voltage source (+VDD) exceeds preselected limits. The reference voltage, which is related to the silicon band gap voltage, is connected to a first input of a comparator of each of the voltage detectors. The reference current, which is derived from the silicon band gap voltage, is connected to a current source of each of the detectors. Each detector has a hysteresis circuit which changes the point at which the comparator switches in the event that +VDD crosses into or outside of a preselected operating range. The delay/disable circuit ensures that the reference voltage is stable before the voltage detectors are activated, and that the voltage detectors are disabled when the supply voltage source falls below a minimum value which causes the reference voltage to be invalid (i.e., to be outside the preselected operating range. Outputs of the comparators are coupled to the output logic circuitry. The output logic circuitry includes a two input EXCLUSIVE OR logic circuit, a delay circuit, a two input OR logic gate, a transistor, a two input NOR logic gate, and an inverter.

    • A diverter interfaces first and second telecommunication lines from first and second telecommunication sources, respectively, with a third line coupled to a station set. The diverter includes separate line and set monitors and a control unit. The line and set monitors monitor and detect predetermined selective signals such as (a) ringing signals propagating on the first and second lines, and (b) line access codes, flash hook, and line change requests signals generated by the station set. In response to the detected predetermined selective signals, the line and set monitors generate first, second, and third output control signals representative of the predetermined selective signals on the first, second, and third lines, respectively, to the control unit. The control unit, which is responsive to output signals from the line and set monitors, selectively couples a predetermined one of the first and second lines directly to the third line without interfering with the predetermined selective signals and states present on the first, second, and third lines. The control unit also generates predetermined output control signals to the line and set monitors for generating output signals such as call waiting signals for transmission to the station set on the third line. The diverter is powered from the first and second lines, and its actions remain invisible to and do not affect the first and second telecommunication sources and the station set.
