    • A drive mechanism especially useful in assemblage with a harmonic drive transmission for providing a desired rotational input to the wave generator of the harmonic drive transmission, and allows for a wide speed range selection while minimizing component wear, instability, and heat generation problems. Such a harmonic drive assembly is particularly useful in powering a controlled infeed or chill stand in a printing press and permits the precise adjustment of the tension of the continuous paper web moving through such a press. The drive mechanism supplies rotational movement from the input shaft of the harmonic drive transmission to the wave generator tuner shaft and includes pulley means operatively coupled to the input shaft, an arm assembly mounted for pivotal movement about the tuner shaft, and a positioning mechanism for precisely pivoting the arm assembly as desired. The arm assembly includes a variable sheave pulley operatively interconnected with the pulley means and tuner shaft, such that pivoting the arm assembly changes the pitch diameter of the variable sheave pulley and effects a corresponding change in the rotational velocity of the wave generator tuner shaft.

    • An offset printing press is provided with a novel dual form planetary inker having improved printing characteristics. In use, a plate cylinder rotates to initially contact an ink/water form roller and subsequently contact a second form roller which is devoted exclusively to ink. The ink form roller is operable to insure that voids caused by lint, dust and other debris in the ink train are covered by the second form roller; additionally, the ink form roller provides a second working nip through which a second layer of ink is averaged with the previously deposited ink layer, such that ghosting is substantially eliminated. Both of the form rollers as well as numerous distributor rollers are rotatably carried by a shiftable frame which is pivotally interconnected with a support that carries the plate cylinder. The frame is shiftable from a first position wherein the forms are in rolling engagement with the plate cylinder and a second position wherein both of the forms are spaced from the plate cylinder; however, as the frame is lowered toward its first or working position, the ink/water form is disposed to contact the plate cylinder before the ink form, such that the plate is effectively dampened before ink is applied thereto. In particularly preferred forms, the planetary inker engages the plate cylinder on only two lines of contact, such that any one of a number of various plate cylinder diameters may be utilized.

    • A punch ring apparatus particularly useful in a printing operating involving web fed paper is provided which is easily adapted for punching file holes, line holes, or a wide variety of hole patterns in the moving paper web, thereby substantially reducing makeready times and associated costs. The punch ring hereof preferably includes a plurality of radially-oriented, spaced-apart punches mounted in the punch ring and radially shiftable between an outermost punch position and a retracted position, with the punches being spring biased into the retracted position. The punch ring preferably includes an annular concentric groove in an axial face thereof, with the proximal ends of the punches extending into the groove when the punches are in the retracted position. One or more annular camming rings are received in the groove and configured such that axial rotation of a camming ring will outwardly shift one or more of the punches into the punch position to produce the desired hole punch pattern. Complementally, the die ring of the present invention is configured for operation with any of the hole punch patterns selectable on the punch ring. Thus, the operator can quickly and easily reconfigure the punch ring apparatus hereof for a different hole punch pattern in a minimum amount of makeready time.

    • A bender for plastic printing plates locates the line of fold from the leading edge of the plate by providing positioning means adjacent the die surface. The printing plate is placed on a flat base and adjusted to engage the positioning means, the latter in alignment relative to the die. Next, a guide means lifts an edge segment of the plate into a position for engagement by a channel carried by the die. As the die swingably moves through an arc, the edge segment is reversely folded back and into contact with an adjacent area of the sheet while forming a crease sufficient to overcome a substantial part of the memory of the sheet along the line of fold. Consequently, plate image will be precisely parallel to the line of fold, thereby minimizing setup time. Also, plates of various lengths may be bent without adjusting the bender.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling the amount of ink transferred to the ink train in a printing press, which reduces press makeready and precisely regulates the ink transfer amount regardless of press speed. The control apparatus includes a fountain roller in operable contact with an ink supply, and a ductor roller mounted for shiftable movement between the ink train and the fountain roller. A sensor provides a signal representative of the interval of rotational movement of the fountain roller while the ductor roller is in contact with the fountain roller and thereby made available for ink transferring contact therewith. This interval is indicative of the amount of ink transferred from the fountain roller to the ductor roller for deposit to the ink train. Further, the control apparatus includes a processor control assembly which receives signals from the sensor and is operable for receiving an instruction input from the press operator indicative of the desired amount of ink transfer. The processor is programmed to correlate the operating instruction input and signal such that when a programmed relationship exists therebetween, the processor initiates shifting of the ductor roller out of contact with the fountain roller.

    • An ejection-type inking assembly for use in printing presses is provided which gives precise, readily alterable ink application to an inking roll train and eliminates conventional ink fountains and associated adjustable ink keys. The inking assembly preferably includes a shuttle-mounted reciprocal inking unit having an ink ejector nozzle, a supply of ink and a feed pump for pressurizing successive charges of high viscosity ink and delivering the charges at a constant flow rate to the nozzle. The preferred pump is a twin screw, counter rotating positive displacement device driven by means of a stepper motor. As the inking unit traverses an ink-receiving roller, the stepper motor is activated for precise periods of time correlated with the position of the unit, so as to deliver measured, variable quantitites of ink for each respective increment of distance traveled by the inking unit. In practice, the copy plate is electronically scanned to ascertain the amount of ink needed for each strip zone on the copy, and this information is employed with appropriate microprocessor control to operate the pump stepper motor as required to deliver the proper variable quantitites of ink to the ink train during translation of the inking unit along the length of the ink-receiving roller. Use of a shiftable inking unit including the ink supply, pump and motor eliminates long, high pressure ink feed lines and minimizes ink wastage, particularly in short printing runs.

    • An improved continuous web handling apparatus and method for printing, handling, collating and final processing of multiple-page printed items such as business forms or the like is provided which employs separate, shiftable, track-mounted web supports having individual, pivotal, spring-biased web keepers to facilitate accurate, continuous draping of printed webs onto the supports for subsequent handling and processing thereof. In preferred forms, the apparatus includes a web fed printing press which continuously feeds printed web to a draping station adjacent the conveyor track; the draping station includes a novel, vacuum air pickup bar intermittently rotated by a five-lobe internal geneva gear mechanism, along with actuating apparatus which pivots the respective web keepers open during initial stages of web drapage and thereafter allows the keepers to close against and hold the web in place. A plurality of webs can be draped one on top of the other on the supports and/or printed on both sides thereof and thereafter removed from the supports for additional processing at speeds economical for short run printing, without fear that the webs will become unacceptably misaligned. The air pickup bar includes an improved web-engaging resilient suction pad, and internal structure for varying the number of bar ports subjected to vacuum or pressure conditions (in order to effectively handle webs of various widths). The web supports are bidirectionally shiftable, and the keepers can be operated during travel in either direction.

    • A dual harmonic gear phasing device forming a part of a web-forming printing tower or other web-handling station is disclosed which allows static or dynamic, 360.degree. infinite phase alterations of web-contacting rollers for coarse and fine tuning of the registration of a multiple-station printing press. The phasing device comprises an enclosed, oil filled structure having a pair of tandem coupled harmonic drive gears respectively connected through gearing or the like to the press drive and to a desired roller for phase changing purposes. Each phasing device also includes a selectively operable stepper motor coupled to one of the harmonic gears for effecting phase alterations. The harmonic gears serve as a 1:1 gear ratio transmission during normal running operations. The phasing device can be used on hard impression or perfecting printing towers, and on other types of web-handling equipment where proper registration is important, such as numbering and punching units.
