    • A driving method of an active matrix LCD is provided. According to this method, a scan signal has three voltage levels, i.e., an ON voltage Vg, an OFF voltage Voff and a compensation voltage Ve having the opposite polarity with respect to the OFF voltage Voff. In contrast with the conventional capacitively coupled driving method in which the scan signal consists of four voltages, the driving method of this invention can reduce a cost and power consumption for a driver IC without degradation due to flickers or other causes. The method for adjusting the brightness of the LCD accompanying this driving method as well as the method for optimizing design parameters of the compensation voltage Ve and a thin film transistor of the LCD are also described.

    • An improved arrangement of a liquid crystal display device is provided in which the redundancy of a known but unwanted TFT (thin film transistor) defect is suppressed so that the yield per finished liquid crystal display device product can be increased without deterioration in the picture quality. Each pixel of the liquid crystal display device arranged at an intersection of one of scanning lines and one of signal lines is provided with two or three TFTs and also, a storage capacitor which is formed of a portion of a gate insulating layer and is sandwiched between its electrode and a preceding scanning line in the previous row using no extra masking procedure. The source, drain and gate electrodes of both the first and third TFTs are respectively coupled to the same signal line, the electrode of the same pixel and the adjacent scanning lines. The gate, source and drain electrodes of the second TFT are respectively coupled to the same scanning line to which the gate electrode of the first TFT is coupled, the electrode of the same pixel and the electrode of a succeeding pixel provided on the opposite side of the scanning line with respect to the same pixel. The arrangement also has a scanning driver circuit capable of activating two scanning lines at the same time for a sequential one-by-one scanning operation, whereby no fault in a reproduced image will be perceived in spite of the presence of a defective TFT.

    • In a liquid crystal panel in which pseudo dot inversion driving is performed, the occurrence of flicker or vertical and horizontal strings is prevented by preventing an alignment shift between individual layers during the fabrication of a TFT array from producing a difference between the respective abilities of thin-film TFTs to charge adjacent pixels (61, 62). For this purpose, the liquid crystal display panel is constructed such that two TFTs which are enclosed by two adjacent image signal lines (21, 22) and scan signal lines (3) and adjacent to each other along the signal lines (21, 22) have respective source electrodes (71, 72) adjacent to the different image signal lines (21, 22). The source electrodes (71, 72) and drain electrodes (81, 82) of the two TFTs connected to the adjacent pixels (61, 62) are alternately arranged such that variations caused by the alignment shift in the sizes and areas of overlapping portions between the individual layers of the TFTs are equal or the same.
