    • A bar code reader using a high speed scanner, containing: a scanning unit scanning a surface on which a bar code is printed; a bar width detecting unit successively detecting widths of bars; a bar width storing unit storing the widths; an address generating unit generating an address of the bar width storing unit at which each of the widths is to be stored; a fast screening unit determining whether a set of widths successively detected by the bar width detecting unit satisfies a predetermined condition for the set of widths constituting a complete bar code; and a bar code decoding unit reading a set of successive widths from the generated address, and decoding the bar code determined by the complete bar code detecting unit. A type of bar code detecting unit detecting a type of bar code constituted by the detected widths, and an address & type storing unit storing the detected type of bar code, together with information on the generated addresses for the widths of the bar code, may be inserted. The bar code decoding unit contains specific type decoding units for respectively decoding types of bar codes. The bar code decoding unit reads the stored widths from the addresses indicated by the information stored in the address & type storing unit, and decodes the bar code using one of the specific type decoding unit corresponding to the type stored in the address & type storing unit together with the above information.

    • A compact type bar code reader for detecting a bar code symbol provided on a surface of an article. The bar code reader includes a laser beam generation unit for generating the laser beam to be irradiated onto a bar code symbol, and a focus unit for determining a focus of the laser beam, and a scanning pattern forming unit for forming various scanning patterns of the laser beam. The bar code reader also includes a light reflection unit for reflecting the laser beam to and from the bar code symbol, a light collection unit for collecting the laser beam reflected from the bar code symbol, and a light reception unit for receiving the laser beam collected by the light collection unit, and converting it to an electrical signal. The above units are included in a casing so that the laser beam generation unit, the focus unit, the light collection unit, and the light reception unit are arranged at a lower portion of the casing, and the scanning pattern forming unit and light reception unit are arranged at a lower portion of the casing. The light path of the laser beam is formed in such a way that an emitted light path from the laser beam generation unit to the bar code symbol becomes considerably long, and a reflected light path from the bar code symbol to the light reception unit becomes shorter than the emitted light path.

    • A circuit for processing an analog electric signal which is obtained from a photoelectric transformation of a reflected light when scanning a bar code by a light beam. The circuit includes a differentiating circuit for differentiating the analog electric signal, a delay circuit for delaying the output of the differentiating circuit; a first gate signal generating circuit for generating a first gate signal which is active when the level of the output of the differentiating circuit is higher than a positive threshold, a second gate signal generating circuit for generating a second gate signal which is active when the level of the output of the differentiating circuit is lower than a negative threshold, and a comparing circuit for comparing the output of the differentiating circuit with the output of the delay circuit. The output of the comparing circuit being one binary level when the level of the output of the differentiating circuit is higher than the level of the output of the delay circuit, and the output of the comparing circuit is the opposite binary level when the level of the output of the differentiating circuit is lower than the level of the output of the delay circuit. A first gate circuit for detecting transition points in the output of the comparing circuit when the first gate signal is active, and a second gate circuit for detecting transition points in the output of the comparing circuit when the second gate signal is active, are also provided.
