    • In a multi-level printer that enables a plurality of dots to be created in each pixel, the technique of the present invention reduces the unevenness of density and the roughness due to localization of dots in each pixel. The principle of the present invention is applicable to, for example, an ink jet printer that enables ink to be ejected successively in each pixel in the course of the main scan. Multiple tones are expressible in each pixel corresponding to the number of dots created therein. A dot formation pattern is set in such a manner that the center of all dots to be created in each pixel is substantially coincident with the center of the pixel. This arrangement effectively interferes with the localization of dots in each pixel and thereby reduces the unevenness of density and the roughness. In the case of bidirectional recording, this arrangement effectively prevents the misalignment of dot forming positions in a forward pass of the main scan with those in a backward pass of the main scan, thus attaining the high quality printing.

    • The present invention generates voltage signals or driving waveforms to actuate driving elements of a print head according to the programmable generation method discussed below. The procedure first provides a first memory area and a second memory area, in which driving waveform data used to generate the driving waveforms are stored. Different sets of the driving waveform data are stored in the respective memory areas. The procedure selects a working memory area at a predetermined interval of selection and carries out arithmetic operations using the set of driving waveform data stored in the selected working memory area, so as to generate a driving waveform signal. The selective use of the working memory area enables the resulting driving waveform to be switched over at a high speed at the predetermined interval of selection. The two memory areas may be constructed by separate memory chips. This configuration enables a reading operation from one memory area to be carried out in parallel with a writing operation into the other memory area. The arrangement of the present invention attains the high-speed changeover of a working driving waveform among a diversity of driving waveforms, while preventing a significant increase in memory capacity.

    • In an ink jet printer with a print head having two nozzle rows arranged at different positions in a main scanning direction, that is, a 0th nozzle row and a 1st nozzle row, with regard to each color ink, common driving waveforms are used to drive both the 0th nozzle row and the 1st nozzle row. The driving waveforms are periodically and successively output in a specific cycle where a plurality of driving waveforms are allocated to each pixel. A specific relation between the driving waveforms and a pixel is regulated individually for the respective nozzle rows using two latch signals. For example, in the case of nozzles included in the 0th nozzle row, dots are created in a certain pixel with driving signals S1 through S4. In the case of nozzles included in the 1st nozzle row, on the other hand, dots are created in a certain pixel with driving signals S3 through S6. Regulating the interval between the two latch signals enables the positions of dots in the main scanning direction formed by the respective nozzle rows to be finely adjusted in the unit of a driving signal. This arrangement effectively prevents a positional misalignment of dots in the main scanning direction.

    • A recording apparatus can be prevented from becoming dirty, for example, due to incorrectly loading a recording medium. If a width of the recording medium that has been detected by the detection means is shorter than a width, in the direction that intersects the carrying direction of the recording medium, over which the recording information is to be recorded, then a portion of the recording information, of the entire recording information, corresponding to the width, or to less than the width, of the recording medium that has been detected by the detection means is recorded onto the recording medium by the recording head. A notice is made when the width of the recording medium that has been detected by the detection means is different from a width of the size of the recording medium that has been set with the setting means. The ON/OFF of an operation through which the detection means detects the width of the recording medium is settable.
