The developer used contains magnetic carrier particles and toner particles. An alternating electric field is formed in the developing position or zone. A relative volumetric ratio Q (%) of the magnetic carrier particles in the developing position satisfies 15.0.ltoreq.Q.ltoreq.28.0. The relative volumetric ratio is defined asQ=(M/h).times.(1/.rho.).times.C.sigma./(T+C)where M (g/cm.sup.2) is an amount of applied developer on a developing sleeve surface per unit area, h (cm) is a height of space in the developing position, .rho. (g/cm.sup.3) is a true density of the magnetic carrier particles, C/(T+C) (%) is a weight ratio of the carrier particles in the developer on the surface of the sleeve, and .sigma. is a ratio of a peripheral speed of the sleeve relative to the peripheral speed of the photosensitive member.

    • An image forming apparatus includes an image bearing member movable through first and second developing positions in the order named and a bias voltage applying device applies a first developing bias voltage to a first developer carrying member and a second developing bias voltage to a second developer carrying member. The first bias voltage has a phase of a first electric field for applying to the toner a force from the developer carrying member to the image bearing member for a period t11 in the first developing position and a phase of a second electric field in the opposite direction to the first for a period t21 in the first developing position. The second bias voltage has a phase of a third electric field for applying to the toner a force from the developer carrying member to the image bearing member for a period t12 in the second developing position and a phase of a fourth electric field in the opposite direction to the third for a period t22 in the second developing zone. A ratio of period t22 to period t12 is larger than a ratio of period t21 to period t11. A; and peak level of the second bias voltage in period t12 is larger than a peak level of the first bias voltage in period t11 and a peak level of the second bias voltage in period t22 is smaller than a peak level of the first voltage in period t21.

    • The image forming method is executed by projecting a light image on a rotatable recording member to consecutively form electrostatic latent images corresponding to the light image, developing the latent images, projecting a predetermined amount of light onto a non-imaged area present between two consecutive latent images on the recording member to form an electrostatic image, detecting potential of the electrostatic image, and controlling the development of the latent images next to the electrostatic image detected during the detection of the potential in response to the detection results. This method is performed in the image forming apparatus which includes a rotatable recording member, processing units for projecting a light image onto the recording member to consecutively form electrostatic latent images corresponding to the light image, a developer unit for developing the latent images, a voltage applying circuit for applying a voltage to the developer unit, a projecting unit for projecting a predetermined amount of light onto a non-imaged area present between two consecutive latent images on the recording member, a detector for detecting surface potential of the non-imaged area, and a controller for controlling the voltage applying circuit in response to detection output from the detector in the development of the latent image next to the non-imaged area in the developer unit.
