The base station adapts a coding rate of user data being transmitted to a first mobile station in a forward channel (e.g. a Supplemental Channel) in order to maximize the number of Walsh codes available for use in the base station. The base station adapts the coding rate by increasing the coding rate and then transmitting the user data at the increased coding rate using a longer Walsh code. The longer Walsh code and the increased coding rate are selected in order to meet a target data rate.

摘要： For use in a wireless network, a base station that reduces the call set-up time for a time-sensitive application. The base station comprises a message controller for receiving an incoming control message that initiates the time-sensitive application in a mobile station. In lieu of a conventional page message, the message controller transmits a short data burst message to the mobile station to initiate the time-sensitive application. The short data burst message is transmitted in a forward control channel. The mobile station completes the set-up by transmitting back an L2 Acknowledgment message in lieu of a conventional page response message.

摘要： The present invention decreases the time required to determine whether a call connection between a base station and a mobile station in a wireless network has failed during a call set up procedure. A preamble frame detector in the base station detects preamble frames transmitted by the mobile station. When the base station detects missing preamble frames the base station increases the power level of null frames that the base station transmits to the mobile station. The more powerful null frames increase the likelihood of a successful call connection. The base station releases the call if a connection is not made in less than five seconds. The mobile station similarly releases unsuccessful call connections.
