摘要： An apparatus of recording data on a recording medium includes an optical recording device and a microcomputer. The recording medium has a lead-in area, a lead-out area, and a data zone, where the data zone has a user data area and a spare area. When the microcomputer receives a command for physically overwriting first data in a first area within the user data area and determines that the first area is included in a pre-recorded area, it controls the recording device to record the first data in a first replacement area instead and to record a first entry in a TDMA, where the first entry specifies the locations of the first area and the first replacement area. In addition, when the microprocessor receives a command for recording second data in a second area within the user data area and finds the second area defective, it controls the optical recording device to record the second data in a second replacement area instead and to record a second entry in the TDMA, where the second entry specifies the locations of the second area and the second replacement area.

摘要： Disclosed is a write-once optical disc and method for managing a spare area thereof, the write-once optical disc possibly having a temporary defect management area within one or more spare areas. The method includes the steps of: allocating one or more spare areas including the temporary defect management area at an initial status of the optical disc; and during use of the optical disc, expanding the spare area allocated including the temporary defect management area to set a new spare area. By employing the above optical disc and method, it becomes possible to establish unified regulations on the structures of the spare area and temporary defect management area applicable to the write-once optical disc, so that usage efficiency of the optical disc can be improved.

The method of closing a recording medium includes: determining a position in which recognition information is to be recorded; recording valid data located after the determined position into an unrecorded area before the guard area; and recording the recognition information in the determined position. It is possible to reproduce recording media having different versions with compatibility using the recording medium and the method of recording/reproducing the data on/from the recording medium and to reduce a time consumed for closing the recording medium.
