    • The liquid crystal display device of the invention includes a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates. A plurality of pixel electrodes is arranged in matrix on the surface facing the liquid crystal layer of at least one of the pair of substrates. A plurality of signal lines and a plurality of two-terminal nonlinear elements are formed. An individual one of the two-terminal nonlinear elements is connected to one of the pixel electrodes associated with the individual two-terminal nonlinear element and one of the signal lines associated with the individual two-terminal nonlinear element. The two-terminal nonlinear element includes: a lower electrode connected to the associated signal line, an insulator formed so as to cover the lower electrode, and an upper electrode connected to the associated pixel electrode. The insulator includes a first insulating film exhibiting non-linearity, a second insulating film formed so as to cover etching edges of the lower electrode, and a slit electrically connecting the upper electrode to the first insulating film. The size of the two-terminal nonlinear element is determined by an opening width of the slit of the second insulating film and a line width of the upper electrode.

    • The present invention realizes a display device with dummy pixel portions and a frame region required for the dummy pixel portions and code notation, in which the frame region is minimized while achieving code notation in required size.In the dummy pixel portions, the number of gate electrodes in a thin film transistor formed by a semiconductor layer is reduced to two, so that distances from a contact hole to another contact hole and to a through-hole can be shortened as compared to those in pixel formation portions, allowing placement of the contact hole and the through-hole in a lower portion in the figure. Provided in the vicinity of the center of the dummy pixel portion is only an electrode equivalent to a storage capacitance line. Thus, a wide transparent region can be ensured to note a code of a sufficient size in the dummy pixel portion.

    • A frame size of a device substrate is reduced without a considerable change of a layout. An element side substrate 10 of a liquid crystal panel includes an element array having display elements 41, and a row control circuit 12 controlling the display elements 41 by a row, formed on a base substrate 11 monolithically. The row control circuit 12 has a configuration of arranging flip-flop circuits 13 corresponding to rows of the display elements 41 consecutively in a one-dimensional manner. An arrangement pitch P_G of the flop-flop circuits 13 is smaller than that P_G_PIX of the rows of the display elements 41, and also a difference between both of the pitches is set to be equal to or smaller than a minimum wiring width or a minimum wiring pitch allowable in the row control circuit 12. A video signal line group, a level shifter, or the like is placed in a vacant area which is obtained by a reduction of the row control circuit 12 in the longitudinal direction thereof. A column control circuit may be reduced in the longitudinal direction thereof with a similar method.
