    • An electronic ballast includes a microprocessor which is programmed to read a voltage value corresponding to an output of the electronic ballast, output a signal which controls an amount of power outputted by the electronic ballast in accordance with the voltage value, read an external voltage value, and select one of a trimming mode and a normal mode as an operating mode based on the external voltage value. The microprocessor is also programmed, when operating in the trimming mode, to set an internal reference value, compare the voltage value corresponding to the output of the electronic ballast with the internal reference value, trim an amount of power outputted by the electronic ballast to a resistor corresponding to an impedance of a High Intensity Discharge lamp by adjusting the signal based upon the comparison, and store a result of the signal adjustment.

    • An apparatus for operating a gas discharge lamp. The apparatus includes an electronic ballast and a controller. The electronic ballast includes a half bridge configuration, a full bridge configuration, a first network, and a second network. The electronic ballast is controlled by a controller that causes the half bridge configuration to ignite an arc between electrodes of the gas discharge lamp in an igniter function that uses the first network, to switch the electronic ballast from the half bridge configuration to the full bridge configuration after the arc is ignited so that a buck inverter function using the second network sustains the arc between the electrodes of the gas discharge lamp, and to provide a transient operation function to the buck inverter function to produce a spike voltage that is used to re-ignite the arc between the electrodes of the gas discharge lamp when the arc extinguishes.

    • In a discharge lamp lighting apparatus for lighting a lighting system using a discharge lamp, a housing used for containing a printed circuit board on which a discharge lamp lighting circuit is mounted is formed by resin molding. In order to put out wires connected to the printed circuit board from an inside to outside of the housing, protruding portions are protruded outward from upper end portions of a front face and a rear face of side walls of a base member which constitute the housing, and wire putting grooves are formed on upper faces of the protruding portions. Furthermore, reinforcing ribs are provided for coupling the protruding portions and portions of the side walls except the protruding portions so as to reinforce mechanical strength of the protruding portions by the reinforcing ribs.

    • A level shift IC (3b) of a power supply/shutoff section (3) is operable, when a shutoff signal (Sa) is input from a timer circuit (8) for a time T during an ON state of a discharge lamp (7), to turn off a MOSFET (3a) so as to shut off power supply to a smoothing capacitor (4). When a detection signal (Sb) of a capacitor voltage is lowered to a value less than a reference voltage Vr1 during input of the shutoff signal (Sa), an output of a comparator (10) is changed from an H level to an L level in an inverted manner. In conjunction with this change, respective outputs of an auxiliary control circuit (12) and a NOT element (12a, 12b) are changed from an L level to an H level in an inverted manner. As a result, a current flows from the NOT element (12a) to an LED (13b) through a resistor (13a) to turn on the LED (13b). Thus, a life end of the smoothing capacitor 4 is annunciated, and a main control circuit (6) is operable to suppress an output of an inverter main circuit (5).
