    • A method for generating a background statistics that distinguishes between gray level information from document areas and non-document areas. The method includes determining a full page background statistics from selected pixels within a scanned area; determining a sub-region background statistics from selected pixels within a sub-region of the scanned area; determining if the sub-region background statistics corresponds to image data from a non-document area; determining if the full page background statistics is corrupted; and generating a validated full page background statistics if the full page background statistics is corrupted.

    • A method and apparatus for digital image reduction using an improved “extendible” perspective projection technique which allows for flexible control of the averaging cell or window size separately from the reduction ratio to improve moir{acute over (e)} suppression or sharpness as desired in the resulting reduced-size image. The extendible perspective projection technique can also be implemented together with ordinary perspective projection or together with a combined one-dimensional filter and linear interpolation technique to produce a reduced-size image of a quality comparable to those produced by the prior technique of using a two-dimensional pre-filter prior to interpolation at a much lesser cost due to the reduced number of required scanline buffers.

    • A method of printing comprising setting a pixel black value of K for an ink limit and identifying each of black dots of a first subset of black dots having pixel black value K greater than the ink limit, and pixel color value of cyan, magenta, and yellow equal to zero. The method further comprises rendering only K for a pixel value for the first subset of black dots and replacing each of black dots of a second subset of black dots of a halftoned bit map for a predetermined area with a process black dot. The method still further comprises adding a non-black dot to each of black dots of a third subset of black dots of the bit-mapped data, wherein the halftoned bit map is generated by halftoning continuous tone data; wherein the black dots of the third subset comprises a percentage of all the black dots that tends to generally increase as a ratio of black coverage to total coverage in the predetermined area increases; wherein the first, second, and third subset comprises black dots that are mutually exclusive; and, printing the bit map.
