    • A smartphone or other portable electronic device is used to control another electronic device using the existing audio output of the phone without modification. The audio link can be ultra-sonic, sub-sonic, or audible and, if the controlled device has an audio output, bi-directional communications may be achieved using the microphone of the smartphone. The smartphone acts as a control panel to program or operate the external device. In one disclosed example, the smartphone is used to control and tune a portable sports event radio using an acoustic link and tone pattern(s).

    • A termite monitoring and baiting station (10) has a housing (20), with a removable cover (30), defining a cavity (24) to receive one or more pieces of termite attractant material (50), eg., mountain ash. The termite attractant material (50) may partially extend outwardly through holes (26,28) in the side wall (21) of the container (20) and has grooves (53) to increase the effective surface area and to provide tracks for the termites. When termite activity is noted, a termite toxicant bait (60) is placed in the cavity (24), to enable the termites to carry the bait material (62) back to their colonies.

    • A smartphone or other portable electronic device is operative to unlock and lock a vehicle without the use of the cellular or Wi-Fi network or any additional hardware added to the portable unit. The system, which is configured for use with a vehicle having an existing receiver to receive remote keyless entry (RKE) codes, includes a vehicle-mounted unit with a microphone to receive an acoustic signal from a smartphone or other portable electronic device programmed to generate a modulated, encoded acoustic vehicle entry command. Circuitry in the vehicle-mounted unit demodulates and decodes the vehicle entry command, and a transmitter in the vehicle-mounted unit transmits the demodulated and decoded command to the existing RKE receiver in the vehicle to execute the command, which may be a door LOCK or UNLOCK command. A passive RKE embodiment is also disclosed.
