    • A reactor includes a housing with an input port for liquid feedstock and an exhaust port for gas produced by a liquid gasification process. The housing includes a pressurized reaction chamber with a pair of spaced apart electrodes having inward free ends immersed in the liquid feedstock. One of the electrodes is mounted on an operable shaft, to move inward and outward relative to the other electrode. A drive mechanism for the operable shaft is located outside the reaction chamber to selectively move the shaft. The reaction chamber is pressurized to increase efficiency of the reactor, and the chamber within which the drive mechanism is located is pressurized to substantially the same pressure as the reaction chamber.

    • The reactor configuration for a liquid gasification process includes an apparatus for liquid gasification such as that described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,159,900. Included in the apparatus for liquid gasification are a reaction chamber at least partially filled with liquid, a pair of electrodes, and means for creating an electrical arc between the electrodes. When the electrical arc is struck, carbon in the reaction chamber is ionized and vaporized while energy is dissipated in the form of high intensity light radiation. Electrons pass though the vaporized carbon, causing the carbon vapor to oxidize or burn releasing COH.sub.2 gas. The displacement of oxygen in the liquid by forced rapid oxidation is an endothermic reaction. The electrodes are spaced-apart so that the arc is located generally in the center of the reaction chamber. The interior of the reaction chamber is generally spherical in shape and is light reflective, so as to prevent dissipation of light energy. Optionally, the reaction chamber is pressurized to further enhance the efficiency of the reaction.

    • The electrode positioning mechanism includes a reversible electric motor. The motor rotates a worm gear which drives a spur gear. The spur gear is connected to an internally threaded collar which is adapted to receive an externally threaded sleeve. The sleeve can move axially lengthwise with respect to the collar. The sleeve acts as a housing for the electrode. Means are provided to retain the sleeve within the collar such that mechanical movement is restricted. The restriction in mechanical movement causes the torque applied by the worm gear to increase. The worm gear is allowed to move axially along the length of the motor shaft. The worm gear is biased into a longitudinally central position by at least one spring. As torque increases, the worm gear is moved from its central position against the urging of the spring. The worm gear is also connected to a washer with a diameter greater than that of the worm gear. The washer moves with the worm gear and is in communication with a switching means that will reverse the direction of the motor when one washer is so moved.

    • An apparatus for a gasification of a biomass liquid solution includes a reaction chamber having a biomass liquid solution therein. The biomass solution includes at least water and carbon. A pair of spaced apart carbon electrodes are immersed in the solution within the chamber. A direct current electrical supply is connected to the electrodes to form an electrical arc passing from one electrode to the other and thereby oxidizing carbon of one electrode. The oxidized carbon forms a carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas mixture, and carbon released from the biomass solution during oxidation is deposited on the opposite electrode. A switch is interposed between the source of electric power and the electrodes so as to selectively switch the polarity of the electric arc to thereby cause oxidation of the opposite electrode and the deposit of carbon on the previously oxidized electrode while continuing to manufacture COH.sub.2 gas. A sensor detects the position of the electric arc, and thereby detects the length of the oxidizing electrode, and is electrically connected to a control unit which will cause the switch to change polarity of the electrodes when the oxidizing electrode reaches a predetermined length. The biomass solution may be formed from a mixture of water with starches, sugars, carbohydrates, alcohols, and the like.
