The universal fluid filter includes: at least one gravity-driven fluid filter media; a housing having an interior and at least one fluid inlet aperture configured to allow a fluid to be treated to enter the interior of the housing by a force of gravity and into contact with the at least one gravity-driven water filter media spaced within the interior of the housing; and at least one treated fluid outlet aperture configured to deliver treated fluid to at least one of a plurality vessels each having a differently sized fluid receiving aperture. The plurality of differently sized fluid dispensing adapters each having a sloped and contoured fluid receiving portion, which is different for each adapter.

The first end has an inlet and outlet for receiving and dispensing a water flow, respectively. The medium or media is spaced within the base portion and receives fluid through the inlet, treats the fluid, and dispenses the fluid through the outlet. The elongated support portion extends from the second end of the base portion and has a sidewall. The sidewall has an exterior facing surface that is substantially aligned with the exterior surface of the side. The elongated support portion maintains a latch assembly location for engaging a filter head assembly and is configured to withstand torsional forces applied by the user for engagement and alignment with an elongated receiving cavity of an appliance.

The first filter stage has a coarse medium spaced in a volume between an outer surface and an inner surface thereof, such that fluid may come into operative contact with the coarse medium to remove first stage materials from the fluid. The second filter stage is coaxially spaced within the first stage and is configured to receive fluid from the first filter stage. A moderate medium in the second filter stage is configured to remove second stage materials from the fluid. The porous filtration membrane is engaged with the inside surface of the second filter stage and has fine pores for filtering small particles from the fluid. The first and second stage materials are suspended away from the filtration membrane to filter the small particles.
