    • A hydraulic connecting device is disclosed, the device being for interconnecting a multi-line hose and a coupling device. The hose has a plurality of flexible hydraulic conduits bunched together within a protective sheath. The coupling device has a plurality of plug pins held within a casing by a retaining disc. The casing is attached to the protective sheath by the connecting device. The connecting device is constituted by a clamping sleeve, which is connected to the protective sheath, and a connecting sleeve, which is connected to the casing. The two sleeves are telescoped together at end portions thereof and are joined together by means of a rotary connection which resists tensile forces. The rotary connection is constituted by a releasable securing element.

    • A roof support unit for a longwall mineral mining installation has a roof shield supported above a floor sill. A first hydraulic ram is provided for advancing the roof support unit. The roof shield is provided with a forward extension which is advanceable by means of a second hydraulic advance ram. A hydraulic control arrangement, which includes the two hydraulic advance rams is provided for controlling the advance of the roof shield extension in dependence upon the working stroke of the first hydraulic advance ram. The control arrangement is such that the amount of hydraulic fluid supplied to one of the pressure chambers of the second hydraulic advance ram is dependent upon the amount of hydraulic fluid expelled from one of the pressure chambers of the first hydraulic advance ram during the working stroke of the first hydraulic advance ram.

    • A hydraulic coupling device is connected to a multi-line hose comprising a plurality of hydraulic lines housed within a flexible sheath. The coupling device comprises a cylindrical nut, a plurality of plug pins housed within the nut, and means for holding the plug pins within the nut. The plug pins are each connectible to a respective line of the hose. The holding means comprises a holding disc, a retaining disc, and a sleeve. The sleeve is connected to the sheath of the multi-line hose. Each of the plug pins is provided with a pair of longitudinally-spaced collars which define therebetween a peripheral groove. The retaining disc is provided with a respective aperture for each of the plug pins. Each of the apertures has a diameter which is slightly greater than the diameter of one of the collars of the associated plug pin. The holding disc is provided with a plurality of radial slots. The peripheral groove of each plug pin engages within a respective radial slot of the holding disc. The collars of each plug pin are positioned on opposite sides of the holding disc, thereby limiting relative longitudinal movement of that plug pin relative to the holding disc. Said one collar of each plug pin is positioned within the associated aperture of the retaining disc.

    • For separation of hydrogen and its isotopes by diffusion through a membraneirtually impermeable to other gases, a non-porous hydrogen-permeable metallic membrane is provided on the gas access side with a coating of an alloy of palladium with at least 45 atomic % Cu or at least 50 atomic percent Ag or at least 7 atomic % Y, the membrane itself containing Cu, Ag or Y respectively in a concentration at least equilibrated with the coating at operation temperature. Preferably the membrane consists of a metal of niobium and/or tantalum bases especially of an alloy containing from 10 to 30 % Ti, 3 to 10 % V, 0 to 25 % Nb and at least 30 % Ta, all by weight, and preferably it is of a composition of 20 to 25 % Ti, 5 to 7,5 % V, 0 to 25 Nb, and at least 50 % Ta, being saturated with copper and or silver, while a copper and/or silver palladium alloy coating is used. Such inherently oxidation sensitive membranes can be stabilized by provision of an internal intermediate layer in the form of a melt forming or containing an alkaline metal hydride and/or an alkaline earth metal hydride. A melt containing alkaline metal and/or alkaline earth metal which forms a hydride, brought into contact on the secondary side of a membrane in accordance with the invention, provides a hydrogen sink on the secondary side and inhibits internal hydride formation and secondary side oxidation of the membrane.

    • A mine roof support unit has a floor sill, a roof cap supported above the floor sill by a pair of inclined hydraulic props, and control apparatus for controlling load-bearing capacity of the props. The inclination of the props relative to the vertical increases as the props are retracted. The control apparatus comprises a pressure-relief valve for limiting the pressure of the hydraulic fluid supplied to the hydraulic props. The pressure-relief valve has a closure member which is biased towards its closed position by a spring. The spring is backed by an abutment member which constitutes a setting device for adjusting the biasing force of the spring, thereby controlling the operating pressure of the pressure-relief valve, and hence the load-bearing capacity of the props. The setting device is operatively associated with a movable part of the roof support unit in such a manner that the operating pressure of the pressure-relief valve is reduced in response to movement of said movable part of the roof support unit which results from extension of the hydraulic props.

    • A hydraulic control system, particularly for controlling the operation of roof support props of a mine working, employs control devices operated manually to feed pressure fluid to the working chambers of the props to effect extension or retraction thereof. A two-state valve device is operated when the props are extended to ensure that the correct setting pressure is established. This valve device has a control piston which is actuated to cause the device to establish independent connection between the main fluid pressure line and the associated working chambers of the props charged with fluid by the initial operation of the control devices. The connection established by the valve device is maintained even if the control devices break connection between the chambers and the pressure line. When the correct setting pressure is reached, a further control piston of the valve device is actuated to break the connection established by the valve device ready for the next operative cycle.
