    • A current limiting fuse having one or more fuse elements disposed for more efficient transfer of heat so that greater electrical current may be continuously conducted through the fuse for a given cross-section of fusible material. Two electrodes or terminals are provided, one of which is cup-shaped or which is tubularly shaped and closed by electrically conducting material at one end. The second electrode projects into the recess created by the cup-shaped electrode and is spaced from it. An electrically insulating support-cover or spacer is provided at the open end of the cup-shaped electrode. This spacer has a central hole or opening to accommodate the projecting electrode or terminal. An array or assembly of fuse elements is disposed upon the enclosed portion of the protruding electrode. Each fuse section is joined at its other end to the inner perimeter of the cup-shaped electrode. The fusible elements may be arranged as spokes on a wheel between a central hub and an outer ring, the central hub being mounted on the inwardly protruding electrode and the outer ring being disposed to make contact with the outer or cup-shaped electrode. The enclosure formed by the cup-shaped electrode, the insulating spacer and the protruding electrode is filled with a granular pulverulent such as quartz sand for electrical arc quenching.

    • A current limiting fuse structure including a latch tripping means or device disposed within the housing of said fuse structure or assembly. The latch tripping device comprises a spring-loaded plunger which when actuated moves through an end ferrule of the fuse housing to thereby trip a latch in the fuse assembly which normally latches the fuse housing in place in one of the fuse assembly terminals. Two operating conditions must both exist simultaneously before the plunger is actuated to unlatch the fuse housing. First, a portion of current sensitive fusible wire disposed in the tripping device to prevent the plunger therein from moving into a tripping position must be blown to thereby allow the plunger to move, and second, the current flowing through the fuse must be substantially zero so that no arc is maintained between the fuse housing ferrule as it swings or moves away from the latching assembly and the stationary part of the overall fuse assembly. This is done by providing an electromagnet in series circuit relationship with the main fuse element so that when the current through the main fuse element is zero, the current through the electromagnet is also zero, and, consequently, an override means which normally prevents the plunger from moving into a position to disengage the latch is actuated. The override means may comprise a springloaded shutter which is held in a first position by the electromagnet when current flows through the electromagnet, but which moves to a second position when the current ceases to flow through the electromagnet thus freeing the plunger to engage in an unlatching operation. In another example, the electromagnet may cause contacts to close when deenergized. These contacts are connected in series circuit relationship with the previously described fusible wire which, in turn, holds the plunger in place. When the contacts are closed, the fusible wire blows or melts, thus freeing the plunger for an unlatching operation.

    • A current limiting fuse element comprising a fuse link or portions of reduced cross section of such a relatively small area or size that they would normally be unable to support themselves alone. The fuse element is intimately bonded or attached to a relatively larger rigid dielectric mass by methods, such as printing, vacuum deposition or etching, so that the larger dielectric mass provides the structural support for the relatively thin current limiting regions or portions and also assists in removing heat from the fuse element during both normal operation and also during fusing of the fuse element. The fuse element and its dielectric support may be used independently or may be used as the fuse element in a cartridge-type fuse where the entire fuse element is disposed in a casing and embedded in a pulverulent, arc quenching material, such as sand, which may be provided to assist in arc extinction upon fusing of the fuse element and to absorb the heat during fusing. In addition, the relatively rigid, dielectric mass may be adapted to accommodate or receive a heat transferring means through which fluid may flow. Heat generated during normal operation of the fuse or during a fusion operation may be removed by the moving fluid.

    • An electrical fuse structure having electrically conducting Tshaped terminals. Two T-shaped terminals are disposed in spaced portions of an electrically insulating box-shaped fuse housing subsection so that part of the top or cross bar portion of the Tshaped terminal is positioned between an internal set of ribs and an inner portion of a housing subsection end wall. A similar fuse housing subsection is disposed over the remaining part of the top portion of the T-shaped member to enclose it. The housing subsections are secured in a complementary arrangement by bolts or rivets disposed in appropriate holes in the two subsections. The two subsections are thus joined to form a completely enclosed box in which the cross bar portions of the terminals are securely enclosed within the box at either end thereof, and with only the vertical or stem portions of the T-shaped terminals extending outwardly through openings in the ends of the box. Sand or other pulverulent arc quenching material is introduced into the inner chamber of the fuse housing through a hole drilled in the cross bar portion of one terminal which communicates with the inner chamber of the box and with the outside of the fuse housing through a suitable aligned opening in the fuse housing. After sand has been introduced into the fuse housing, the hole is sealed with a suitable plug. Fuse elements extend between the enclosed bar portions of the terminals within the enclosed chamber of the fuse housing. Ther fuse elements are surrounded by the pulverluent sand or crystalline material.

    • A current limiting fuse structure comprising a plurality of elements of fusible material adapted for higher voltage circuit operation. Each fuse element has a plurality of areas of reduced cross-section to facilitate the generation of a plurality of arclets at the time of melting to limit electrical current in the circuit to be protected by the fuse during the blowing of the fuse. The fuse elements and/or adjacent pulverulent arc quenching material are enclosed by a housing or casing which may be formed from ceramic material. Edges of each fuse element are disposed in intimate physical or structural contact with the associated casing to facilitate the removal or transfer of heat which may be generated in the areas of reduced cross section. The material from which the casing is made is such a composition or type that is a relatively good electrical insulator so as to withstand the voltage of the protected circuit once the fuse has blown and is also a good conductor of heat so as to efficiently remove heat from the enclosed fuse elements. The casing may be formed from a plurality of sections which may be joined to each other and the terminals of the fuse by high temperature epoxy cement. A metallic heat exchanger or heat sink may be assembled or disposed in intimate contact with an outside surface of the casing either by bolting or by using a suitable bonding material cement so that the heat which may be generalized in the enclosed fuse and which may be conducted away from the fuse elements by the casing may be further conducted to the air or similar environment through the associated heat exchanger.

    • A current limiting fuse including an improved fuse element. The fuse element or link includes portions or regions of reduced cross-section which melt during overload to form a series of voltage arclets. The fusible material of the fuse element between notched regions of reduced cross-section is uniquely shaped to take advantage of electrical potential distribution within it, and the natural tendency of electrical current to flow from notch to notch in specified paths of least resistance. The fuse link has a predetermined geometric shape to accommodate the flow of current in an efficient manner and to eliminate those portions of the fuse link which conduct little or no electrical current during normal operation.
