    • An interference analyzing system and method analyze interference in a dual mode system having a digital network overlaid on an analog network. The digital network includes portable units operating within digital cell sites; whereas, the analog network includes mobile units operating within analog cell sites. The interference analyzing system measures the amount of interference caused by and to the portable units, and the amount of interference caused by and to the digital cell sites. The system individually compares these interference amounts to a predetermined threshold. If either of the interference amounts exceeds the predetermined threshold, the system selects one of the analog cell sites for spectrum clearing and determines the amount of spectrum to be cleared from the selected analog cell site.

    • Apparatus for optical transmission of first and second digital channels. Each digital channel has first and second signal levels. The apparatus has a tunable laser for emitting an optical output at optical frequencies corresponding to current levels. An input which provides a current responsive to the signal levels of the two channels provides current levels to cause the laser to emit a first optical frequency when the first channel has a first signal level and the second channel has a second signal level, a second optical frequency when the first channel has a first signal level and the second channel has a first signal level, a third optical frequency when the first channel has a second signal level and the second channel has a first signal level, and a fourth optical frequency when the first channel has a second signal level and the second channel has a second signal level. An optical transmission medium is coupled to the output of the laser. A local oscillator provides a LO frequency. An envelope detector is coupled to the local oscillator and the transmission medium detects the optical frequency from the laser and provides an IF heterodyne frequency corresponding to the difference between the first LO frequency and the optical frequency from the laser. A mark is generated if the IF heterodyne frequency results from either the first or second optical frequency. The mark indicates a first signal level on the first channel.

    • Apparatus and method for measuring the radio signal (RF) transmission statistics of a communication channel. The apparatus is arranged to receive and process a wide bandwidth signal from which signal power is measured and from which fading or other such transmission problems can be measured for the wide bandwidth. In parallel with the wide bandwidth receiver there is a narrow bandwidth receiver arranged to receive the same RF signal but to process only a single tone or narrow bandwidth portion of the RF signal. From this narrow bandwidth processing the narrow bandwidth transmission statistical characteristics of the RF transmission channel can be measured simultaneously with the wide bandwidth statistical characteristics. The outputs of the spectrum analyzer are digitized and fed to a computer for storage and for other analysis.

    • A system increases the capacity of a CDMA network having a plurality of cell sites. The system defines a pool of frequencies available for assignment, and assigns one of the available frequencies to each of the cell sites so as to minimize the number of neighboring cell sites assigned a same one of the available frequencies. By deploying different frequencies in the cell sites, the amount of interference caused by neighboring cell sites reduces. As a result, the capacity of each of the cell sites operating at a single frequency can be increased, so long as there remains sufficient power to reach the mobile units operating within the cell site. The system attains maximum benefits when the cell sites are located close together and the propagation exponent is low (for example, 10-20 dB/decade).
