    • A housingless heat exchanger including a stack of flat tubes with at least two being cooling tubes and at least one being a bypass tube. Collecting tanks are on the tube ends and diffuse gas streaming in the tube flow paths. The flat tubes each comprise a connected pair of plates defining a flow path, and an enclosed space is defined between adjacent flat tubes. Coolant inlet and outlet channels are formed by connected plate openings connect to the enclosed space between the cooling tubes whereby coolant flows through that enclosed space. A switching valve in one collecting tank is movable between a cooling position in which the gas streams through the cooling tubes and a bypass position in which the gas streams through the bypass tube. A closure in the coolant inlet and outlet channels blocks coolant from adjacent the bypass tube. An insulating plate may also, or alternatively, be between the bypass tube and the cooling tube adjacent the bypass tube to block heat exchange between coolant and the bypass tube.

    • A flat heat exchanger tube formed of a single strip of rolled aluminum, with at least one connection between the two broad sides. The connection is generally parallel to and spaced between the narrow sides and divides the heat exchanger tube into at least two chambers, and includes two legs consisting of bent opposite edges of the aluminum strip, the legs each having a head at adjacent bends along one of the broad sides and feet adjacent the other broad side. The legs lie against each other generally at their head over no more than half of the entire spacing between the two broad sides, with the legs enclosing an angle between them of about 20° to 100° or about 45° to 75°, advantageously 60°.

    • A heat exchanger having a manifold defined by a plurality of connected closure pieces. A corner of the manifold is defined by the connected joint of three closure pieces, where one closure piece has a bent edge abutting an end of a second closure piece adjacent a generally flat section of a third closure piece. The bent edge of the one closure piece adjacent the manifold corner is a bend in a thin portion of the one closure piece, where the thin portion has a sheet thickness which is less than the sheet thickness of the adjacent portions of the one closure piece. Multiple corners of the manifold can be formed in this manner by thinning the thin and bending the portion, then connecting the closure pieces using solder to form a seal in the open cross section at the corners.
