    • An arm harness for applying at least one of distractive and abductive force to a human shoulder has at least two restrictor features mounted on a torso strap to be placed around a patient's waist. A first restrictor feature serves as a fulcrum at a restriction point on the arm spaced from the elbow to limit movement of the arm in one direction at the restriction point. The second restrictor feature applies force to the arm spaced both from the restriction point and from the elbow. In one embodiment, the first restrictor feature is positioned to limit movement of the forearm toward the shoulder, and the second restrictor feature applies force to the wrist to urge the wrist to move toward the shoulder, thereby applying axial distractive force to the shoulder joint. In another embodiment, the first restrictor feature is placed between the upper arm and the torso. The second restrictor feature urges the elbow toward the torso, thereby applying lateral distractive force to the shoulder joint. The two types of restrictor feature pairs may be combined in an arm harness that provides both axial and lateral distraction to the shoulder joint.

    • An electronic network of communication and processing nodes particularly suitable for control of environmental systems has pluralities of the nodes which are sources for certain types of status messages each of which comprise communication of a particular kind of information on the network. To resolve the question of which of the nodes shall furnish each type of status message, one node is designated the coordinator node, and it stores a status message source list which associates the node assigned for each type of status message with the status message type itself and transmits all or a part of the list on the network to allow each of the status message source nodes to determine therefrom their responsibility with respect to each status message type. These status message source nodes can also transmit request messages on the network by which they request responsibility for furnishing a particular type of status message. Upon acceptance of the request in a request message, the coordinator node enters the node transmitting the request message into the status message source list in asociation with the status message type. In one embodiment, the coordinator node monitors the transmission of status messages on the network and if an instance arises where a status message is supplied by other than the one specified in the status message source list, takes remedial action. In another embodiment each node is given a priority for a particular type of status message, allowing the coordinator node to replace a node assigned to a particular type of status message with another node.

    • A tool for scribing a longitudinal groove on an elongate cylindrical rod suitable for implanting as a prosthetic in a living being supports the rod in a linear groove on a bed of a frame of the tool. A track is mounted on the frame and runs parallel to the groove. A carrier mounted on the track can slide on the track in constant spaced relation to and along the groove. A scribe mounted on the carrier extends toward the groove to contact a rod in the predetermined position. A preferred version of the tool has a clamp mounted on the bed for clamping the rod in the predetermined position. Additional features allow for precise angular positioning of the rod and for scribing a dashed line on the rod. In use, the tool operator places the rod in the predetermined position in the groove. The scribe is then pressed into contact with the rod. While the scribe is in pressed contact with the rod, the operator slides the carrier along the track.
