    • A compressor rotor 6a and a turbine rotor 7a are respectively attached at either end of the main shaft 13 so that the compressor rotor 6a is driven by the power generated by the turbine rotor 7a. The main shaft 13 is supported by rolling contact bearings 15 and 16 relative to the radial direction. The thrust force applied to the main shaft 13 is supported by electromagnets 17. A sensor 18 is provided to detect the thrust force which affects the main shaft 13 through air within the compressor 6 and the expansion turbine 7. In the sensor 18, sensor elements having the properties changeable in accordance with a pressing force and capable to electrically detect the change in the properties are arranged in a circumferential direction of the main shaft. The sensor 18 detects the thrust force from the output of the sensor elements.

    • A centrifugal blood pump assembly according to one aspect of the invention includes a housing, an impeller adapted to rotate within the housing for feeding blood, an impeller position control device, and an impeller rotation torque generating device. The impeller rotates without contacting the inner surface of the housing when the position control device and torque generating device are operative. Even when the position control device is inoperative, operation of the torque generating device enables rotation of the impeller while a blood flowpath is defined between the surface of the impeller facing the torque generating device and the inner surface of the housing. A centrifugal blood pump assembly according to another aspect of the invention involves a pump including a housing having blood inlet and outlet ports and an impeller adapted to rotate within the housing for feeding blood. The assembly also includes an uncontrolled magnetic bearing arrangement for the impeller, and controlled magnetic bearing arrangement for the impeller. The bearing arrangements are removably mounted to the pump.

    • An electric direct-acting actuator is proposed which can maintain a large power increasing function without mounting a separate speed reducer. A plurality of planetary rollers (7) are disposed between the radially outer surface of a rotor shaft (5) of an electric motor and the radially inner surface of an outer ring member (1) fixed in position around the rotor shaft (5) so as to be rotatable about the rotor shaft (5) and about their own axes when the rotor shaft (5) rotates. A helical rib is defined by a rib member (9) engaged in a helical groove (8) formed in the radially inner surface of the outer ring member (1). The helical rib is engaged in circumferential grooves (10) formed in the radially outer surface of each planetary roller (7) at the same pitch as the turns of the helical rib. Thus, the rotary motion of the rotor shaft (5) is converted to a linear motion of the planetary rollers (7), so that it is possible to ensure a large power increasing function without mounting a separate speed reducer.
