    • A method of providing calibration data for a printer includes printing a calibration target using the printer. The target includes a plurality of patch sets, each including a plurality of test patches, each patch having a respective color. Scanned patch data for one of the sets are received from a spot scanner. The scanned patch data values are compared to respective aims to determine a reproduction error value for the scanned patch set. A processor automatically determines which of the sets should be scanned next using the calculated reproduction error value. The process is repeated until all sets have been scanned, or until the reproduction error value is less than or equal to a selected threshold. Calibration data are automatically generated using the scanned patch data.

    • A gapless label media which can be carried by a liner or be linerless. Apparatus is also disclosed for printing on and applying resultant labels which are staggered laterally across the media width. In an embodiment of the invention, the label printer comprises a printhead for printing on the media, a sensor sensing the leading edge of each first label at a known distance from the printhead and a drive system moving the plurality of labels from a position of the sensor to a pre-established print position under the printhead. In another embodiment of the present invention, in which there may be lateral drift of the labels, the sensor senses along a path having a width greater than a maximum amount of lateral drift of the plurality of labels. Alternatively, plural sensors may be utilized to detect plural paths through the labels to detect lateral drift of the labels, or to detect alternating ones of the labels.

    • The present invention provides an object-oriented file structuring system. The invention provides a method of defining DATA objects and CONTAINER objects and SYSTEM objects that facilitates navigation through a file structuring system. Notation and nomenclature are defined for building files composed of CONTAINERs and DATA and SYSTEM objects and for defining relationships between and among files, CONTAINERs and DATA. A FOCUS LIST tracks objects of interest and aids in NAVIGATION. CONTAINER objects contain other objects. DATA objects enclose DATA in either machine-dependent or machine-independent value representations. Developers work with logical files and can freely create and modify the logical relationships of file objects. A RECONSTITUTION algorithm periodically updates the physical file to correspond to the logical file.

    • A method is provided of compensating for periodic non-uniformity in an electrophotographic (EP) printer with a rotatable imaging component, and a runout sensor for measuring the distance between a first reference point and the surface of the first component along a first reference axis. An image signal representing an image to be produced on a receiving member by the printer is received. The component is rotated. While it is rotating, the distance for the component is measured using the runout sensor. A correction value corresponding to the measured distance is automatically determined using a processor. The image data corresponding to the measured distance are automatically adjusted with the correction value using the processor. Toner corresponding to the adjusted image data is deposited on the receiver using the component.
