    • A network system including a plurality of devices connected to one another via a network includes a grouping processing section configured to, from among the plurality of devices, perform grouping of devices having at least one predetermined item common thereto in terms of device usage, and a representative selection section configured to select one of the devices having been grouped as a representative device.     • A wireless network device, such as a printer, to enter an infrastructure-type user wireless LAN as a station, has an additional access point function. A printer having an ESS-ID ‘MM’ as an initial setting is connected with a user wireless LAN, which includes an access point and a personal computer and uses a common ESS-ID ‘XX’. In this case, the procedure changes the ESS-ID set in the personal computer to ‘MM’ to establish an infrastructure-type communication with the printer. This arrangement enables the ESS-ID set in the printer to be changed to the common ESS-ID ‘XX’ for the user wireless LAN without varying the ESS-ID set in the access point. The technique of the invention ensures easy connection of any device without sufficient input interfaces to the wireless LAN.

    • A print data generation system is provided that is compatible with any of a plurality of printers of a printing network. A print driver of the print data generation system interprets configuration information indicating the processes required for using a particular selected printer, and loads the processes from a storage section to memory. The processes are then executed in the appropriate manner to render the print driver compatible with the selected printer. The print driver can thus be made compatible with any of the printers in the network by loading and executing the appropriate processes in the appropriate manner.

    • A single CPU within a network printer executes in multiplex a communication task for extracting print job data from a packet received from the network in accordance with the communication protocol, a language task for interpreting the print job data, and a print task for generating raster image to be sent to a print engine on the basis of the result of the interpretation. Further, the CPU includes a watch dog timer (WDT) task which is activated by the communication task. The WDT task operates in a manner that, when the communication task is blocked for a long time due to the busy state of the language task and the print task and can not return a response to the network, the WDT task returns a response of busy to the network before the transmission originator disconnects the connection to the network thereby to maintain the connection, so that a succeeding packet can be received from the transmission originator when the communication task is released from the blocked state later.
