    • To transfer a file comprising block data at high speed between sequential access type auxiliary memories, a file transmission program inquires of an operating system about the physical storage positions of the block data, determines a reading order to reduce the read access time on the basis of the results of inquiry, and issues read requests sequentially to the operating system according to the reading order. The file transmission program requests the operating system to transmit the read block data. The block data together with respective logical identification data, for example, logical block numbers, are transmitted to a receiving end which may be another computing system. The operating system at the receiving end is requested to secure the number of physical data blocks required to store the block data. The write order of the block data to the physical data blocks is then determined to reduce the access time and the block data are respectively stored in the secured physical data blocks according to the write order. Sequentially, a pair of the logical identifiers of each block data actually written to the data area and physical identification data of the data blocks are stored in the data area.

    • A server computer, upon receiving a signal for a write request to a storage device from a management computer, performs a provisional write, which is a write related to the write request signal, to a first storage part in the server computer, and sends a first notification signal indicating that the provisional write has been completed to the management computer. The management computer, upon receiving the first notification signal, transmits a second notification signal indicating that the management computer has received the first notification signal to the server computer. The server computer, upon receiving the second notification signal, performs write processing to the storage device. Thereby, a failure caused by dual execution of write processing to the disk is prevented when transferring processing from a main server to an auxiliary server in a case where the main server fails with regard to processing accompanying writing to the disk.

    • When the OS judges that a read request to the secondary storage device from the user process is the sequential access, the OS judges whether prefetching is to be stopped before the data succeeding to the data designated by the request is prefetched, so as to decrease replacement of data prefetched to the main memory by other data before the data is used. The judgment is executed to prevent that succeeding data from being replaced by other data after the succeeding data is prefetched to the cache area in the main memory. That is, it is judged whether the data requested by the read request has already been prefetched, and has already been replaced by other data before the requested data is used by the user process, if the requested data has been prefetched. When these two conditions are met, prefetch is useless. The prefetching accompanying this read request is not executed, the prefetch stop flag is set, and prefetching is prohibited to the succeeding sequential access by this prefetch stop flag. The technology is also disclosed which controls allocation of the cache entries so that a cache entry which holds prefetched data is not used to hold other data before the data is used.

    • A plurality of computers to execute jobs, a management computer to manage the execution of jobs and the disposition of data in the computers and a storage device storing data are interconnected via a network. The management program for the management computer divides the data into distributed data according to hint information and distributively disposes the distributed data and their replicas in memory storages allocated in memories of the computers. The computers execute the job using the distributed data allocated to their own memory. In the event of a fault in any of the computers, the management computer requests computers having the replicas of those distributed data disposed in the faulted computer to re-execute the job.

    • A server system has servers that can be operated through switching as a primary system and a standby system, and a shared disk unit for storing data accessed by the servers. Each of the servers has a driver that acquires information on a configuration inside the shared disk unit after starting of the system. The driver sets the shared disk unit in an active state in which an access request can be sent to the shared disk unit. Access control determines whether the access request issued by an application should be sent on the basis of a management table indicating inhibited types of access requests for each access destination. The access control sends the access request to the driver when the access request is not inhibited for an access destination of the access request. By this arrangement, hot standby switching processing can be performed at high speed.
