    • A method for inspecting a head unit moving device is characterized by having the steps of running a inspection use tape in which a servo signal is written displaced in a width direction of a magnetic tape at a predetermined frequency and amplitude; measuring a position of a head unit practically moved in a width direction of the inspection use tape in response to the servo signal; and calculating a difference between the position and a position to be instructed so as to move the head unit in response to the servo signal, wherein the head unit moving device moves the head unit with a servo signal reading head, a data signal recording head, and a data signal reproducing head in the width direction of the magnetic tape in response to the servo signal read from the magnetic tape by the servo signal reading head.

    • Disclosed is a servo writer which forms servo bands on information recording media so as to enable a drive to track the servo bands with great accuracy by using a recording/reproducing head. The servo writer includes a driving mechanism for running a tape-shaped information recording medium, a servo pattern writing means for writing servo patterns on the running tape-shaped information recording medium, thereby forming servo bands thereon, and a tape edge forming mechanism for cutting evenly an edge of the running tape-shaped information recording medium, so that the edge becomes parallel to the servo bands.

    • A servo write head assembly comprises an AC demagnetizing head that slides in contact with a magnetic tape all of which surface is magnetized in one direction of longitudinal directions thereof, and demagnetizes a data band of the magnetic tape; a servo write head that slides in contact with the magnetic tape, magnetizes a servo band of the magnetic tape in a reverse direction, and writes a servo signal; and a guide for regulating a movement in lateral directions of the magnetic tape that is running, wherein the AC demagnetizing head and the servo write head are integrally configured and the guide is provided between the AC demagnetizing head and the servo write head.

    • Disclosed are a servo writer and a servo writing method capable of writing a servo signal onto a servo band of a magnetic tape in an excellent condition, regardless of the thickness of the magnetic tape. The servo writer includes a magnetic tape traveling system for traveling a magnetic tape, a DC erase head for magnetizing a servo band of the magnetic tape in one direction along the length of the magnetic tape, a servo signal write head for writing a servo signal onto the servo band in the direction opposite to the one direction, a servo signal read head for reading the servo signal from the servo band, and control device for controlling a degauss current supplied to the DC erase head, based on an output read from the servo signal by the servo signal read head.
