    • A triggering event causes a telematics device to transmit information to a user device. Or, the telematics device may perform a task in response to determining that a trigger even occurred. The user device generates an alert in response to the transmitted information producing the alert, for example, graphically, audibly, textually, or using a combination thereof. A triggering event may be the attaining of a certain location of the TCU along a predetermined commute route. Or, the detection of force exerted on a vehicle, possibly indicating attempted theft of the vehicle. Upon the triggering event occurring, the TCU can formulate a message, for example calculate time of arrival based on the traffic conditions and speed limits along the commute route. The TCU may also transmit its location information to another device, such as the user device, or a device coupled thereto, and the other device formulates the message.

    • A device updates a value representing its current height above ground when it detects a height change. The device uses the slope calculated from collected barometric pressure data samples to calculate height change during a period when the value of the slope exceeds a predetermined value. The device also analyzes a predetermined number of barometric pressure sensor data samples preceding and succeeding a height change indicated by the slope change. The device performs an evaluation, i.e., determining the difference between an average of the preceding and succeeding samples, to determine a height change. The device may select either the slope-of-the-curve-during-the-height-change-period method or the difference-between-the-averages method based on meeting a criterion. The processor de-energizes a GPS circuit, height determination method, and sets the height above ground to zero if it detects movement. Placing the device on a charger resets the device's height value to the charger height above ground.

    • A method of inserting a slug of powdery depolarizer material into a can as a step in the manufacture of an electrical dry cell, comprises extruding the material along a passage by a ram, which over the first part of its stroke consolidates the material against the effect of a restriction in the passage and then injects the consolidated material through a nozzle into the container, so as to fill the can in a single stroke of operation, the bottom of the can starting close to the nozzle and then progressively moving away from it at a rate which is directly proportional to that of the ram, under positive control by a cam. The working end of the ram is preferably formed with a recess communicating with the outer surface of the ram by way of one or more bleed holes, which is or are closed just before extrusion starts, whereby a substantially constant volume of material is injected for each stroke of the ram, each bleed hole being in the form of a circumferentially extending slot of which the length can be adjusted by rotation of a slotted outer sleeve. The ram reciprocates in a vertical direction, and a reservoir for powdery material extends horizontally around the mouth of the compression, being fitted with a paddle for sweeping material into the mouth of a compression cylinder prior to each stroke of the ram.

    • Stiffness and other properties of a wood member, such as a log, can be determined by excitation with a swept frequency sonic pulse followed by measurement of the resonant frequency by an accelerometer in contact with the log. It is desirable to minimize the sweep range in order to utilize the power in the sonic pulse to the maximum effect. This should be centered about the expected resonant frequency and is typically no more than about 300 HZ either side of the expected frequency. The resonant frequency is dependent principally on wood species and length. By first measuring length and inputting this into the associated software the sweep range can be controlled to achieve the maximum output signal. Time duration of the sweep is typically no longer than about 0.2 seconds and can be considerably shorter.
