    • A shadow mask includes a shadow mask body opposed to a phosphor screen, and its peripheral portion is fixed to a mask frame. The shadow mask body includes a rectangular effective portion that is formed having a large number of electron beam passage apertures. The effective portion has a major axis and a minor axis that pass through its center and extends at right angles to each other. The shadow mask comprises an auxiliary mask fixed to a region that contains the minor axis of the effective portion of the shadow mask body. The auxiliary mask is in the form of a strip that extends long in the direction of the minor axis and has a large number of electron beam passage apertures that communicate individually with the electron beam passage apertures of the effective portion.

    • A color cathode ray tube includes a face plate having a curved inner surface and a substantially rectangular effective area. A phosphor screen is formed on the inner surface of the face plate, and a shadow mask is arranged to oppose the phosphor screen. The effective area is formed such that, in an area of the effective area which is away from the center of the effective area by 1/2 or more of a distance between the center of the effective area and an axial end portion of the effective area in the major axis, a difference between the thickness of the face plate at a point which is on the minor axis and located away from the center of the effective area by a predetermined distance and the thickness of the face plate at a point which is on the diagonal axis and located away from the center of the effective area by the predetermined distance is smaller than a difference between the thickness of the face plate at the point on the diagonal axis and the thickness of the face plate at a point which is on the major axis and located away from the center of the effective area by the predetermined distance.

    • A shadow body includes an effective area having minor and major axes that extend perpendicularly to each other. Each of electron beam passage apertures formed in the effective area is a communication hole that connects a larger hole opening in one surface of the effective area and a smaller hole opening in the other surface of the effective area. A joint portion between the larger and smaller holes of each electron beam passage apertures in the central portion of the effective area is situated in the thickness-direction central portion of the mask body. A joint portion between the larger and smaller holes of each electron beam passage aperture in the peripheral portion of the effective area is situated closer to the one surface side of the effective area than the thickness-direction central portion is, the larger hole being offset against the smaller hole in the direction of the major axis.

    • A liquid lens is mounted in a lens opening provided in a photographic instrument by making use of a mounting member made of a material which transmits light of predetermined wavelength and includes an inner wall shaped and dimensioned to receive the periphery of the lens in spaced, opposed relationship. The mounting member includes a portion mounted or to be mounted to the optical instrument. A bonding material is provided between the lens periphery and the mounting member wall, and the bonding material is activated by exposure to light of the predetermined wavelength, which is injected from outside, through the mounting member. Preferably, the light is injected with a guide member having an opening with an interior wall shaped and dimensioned to conform to an exterior wall of the guide member. The light may be injected from an edge of the guide member remote from the opening, through the guide member, and into the mounting member.
