    • A method and apparatus for electrostatically transferring a toner image from a toner image bearing member (TIBM) to a receiver sheet is disclosed. A receiver sheet is moved within a nip defined between a transfer roller having a resistive outer layer and a toner image bearing member supporting a toner image. To provide for transfer, there is applied an electrical bias to the resistive layer from a conductive member located beneath the resistive layer and in electrical contact with the resistive layer. There are also applied to an outer surface of the resistive layer a first contact voltage to establish an post-nip electrical voltage distribution to a post-nip region of the transfer roller that is immediately downstream of an in-nip region. The post-nip electrical voltage distribution is accomplished by having the first contact voltage be applied at first points on the outer layer of the transfer roller, the first points being within or proximate the post-nip region. There is also applied to the resistive outer layer a second contact voltage to establish an electrical voltage distribution to a pre-nip region of the transfer roller immediately up-stream of the in-nip region. This pre-nip electrical voltage distribution is accomplished by having the contact voltage be applied at second points on the outer layer of the transfer roller, the second points being within or proximate the pre-nip region. The resistivity of the outer layer, the voltage provided to the conductive member, the voltage bias to the TIBM, and the first and second contact voltages establish an in-nip electrical field or voltage suitable for transfer of the toner image to a receiver sheet and for suppression or reduction of pre-nip and post-nip ionization.

    • A method and apparatus for electrostatically transferring a toner image from a toner image bearing member to a receiver sheet is disclosed. Because of the resistivity of the outer layer, the pre-nip and post-nip voltage distributions establish an in-nip electrical field suitable for transfer of the toner image to a receiver sheet.

    • This invention provides a method and apparatus which forms a desired toner image on a receiver by: forming at least one electrostatic image on at least one imaging member; toning at least one said electrostatic image with marking toner particles of at least one color; transferring said marking toner particles from at least one said imaging member to the surface of an intermediate transfer member in the presence of an electric field which urges said marking toner particles toward said intermediate transfer member; and transferring said marking toner particles from said intermediate transfer member to a receiver in the presence of an electric field which urges said marking toner particles toward said receiver; wherein, when transferring said marking toner particles to said intermediate transfer member from at least one said imaging member, said surface of said intermediate transfer member contacts non-marking toner particles in areas which receive marking toner, and wherein said marking toner particles have a volume weighted diameter of 2 to 8 .mu.m and comprise pigment at a concentration of from 10 to 50% by weight of the total toner composition.

    • An electrographic primary imaging member upon which an electrographic image may be written includes a support member; a charge retention layer for the electrographic image; a compliant layer being formed on the support member as an intermediate layer between the charge retention layer and the support member, the compliant layer being formed of a material having a Young's modulus of between about 0.1 MPa and about 100 MPa and a thickness of between at least 1 mm and about 20 mm; and the charge retention layer being a dielectric and being substantially thinner than the compliant layer and being supported on the support member and having a Young's modulus of greater than that of the compliant layer and at least about 80 MPa. The imaging member may form part of an electrographic recording apparatus wherein the electrographic image is developed and transferred to a receiver sheet or transferred to an intermediate transfer member from which it is then transferred to a receiver sheet.
