    • A reinforced metal box culvert is provided which has the standard crown, opposing sides and opposite curved haunches. The culvert is characterized in having continuous corrugated metal sheet reinforcement secured to at least the crown of the culvert and extends the length of the culvert which is effective in supporting the load. The corrugated reinforcement has a profile which abuts the crown corrugations with the troughs of the reinforcement being secured to the crests of the corrugated crown. The corrugated reinforcement sheet has a curvature complementary to the corrugated crown to facilitate securement. The continuous reinforcement, as secured to the culvert in an uninterrupted manner, provides an optimum load carrying capacity for selected extent of reinforcement provided by the reinforcement metal sheets.

    • A method for controlling deformation of an erected structural metal plate culvert or underpass during backfilling of the erected structure comprises: building progressively a reinforced earth retaining system on each side of the erected structure by alternately layering a plurality of compacted layers of earth with interposed layers of reinforcement to form reinforced earth on each side of the erected structure and securing to each side of the structure each said layer of reinforcement in the reinforced earth, whereby such securement of each said layer of reinforcement to said structure controls deformation of the erected structure during backfilling with the reinforced earth on each side of the structure. The layer of reinforcement may be a plurality of strips extending away from the structure, or a reinforcement mat of interconnected rods.

    • Soil/metal supporting structures commonly include panel sections having a short radius of curvature in the range of 750 mm to 2,500 mm. In such soil metal supporting structures the panels are of heavy gauge in the range of 2 mm to 10 mm thickness. Usually, expensive tooling and forming techniques are required to cold form the heavy gauge material into a curved shaped having such short radius. Such expensive techniques have been eliminated by this invention by virtue of the improvements comprising:a) the panels have a high degree of ductility before being cold formed, such high degree of ductility being determined by a ratio of specified minimum yield strength to specified minimum tensile strength equal to or less than 0.8;b) the panels are cold formed with cross-corrugations in each of the inside ridges of the longitudinally formed corrugations of the panel, the cross-corrugations are sinusoidal and cross section and allow the cold forming of a short radius panel on a consistent basis without distorting panel shape to facilitate thereby interconnection of the panels for the structure;c) the cross-corrugations have a depth in the range of 4 mm to 12 mm and a pitch of 40 mm to 70 mm; andd) the cold formed panels of short radius by virtue of the sinusoidal shaped cross-corrugations provide a finished panel with marginal increase in ductility, thereby allowing for either plastic or elastic analysis in providing the soil/metal supporting structure.

    • A pressure relief wall assembly has a wall panel, one end of which is permanently secured to a frame. A plurality of elements secure a second end of the wall panel to the frame, and these elements fail when an excess pressure is applied to the wall panel. A retaining member is provided so that, when excess pressure is applied to one of the two sides of the wall panel, the second end of the wall panel is retained until a further increase of pressure occurs. The retaining member then releases the second end of the wall panel. This enables the wall assembly to be designed for different release pressures in blow-in and blow-out modes, so that no excess load is applied to a support frame in either mode.

    • A pressure relief wall assembly has a liner panel and first and second exterior panels. A first portion or end of the liner panel is secured to one part of the frame. A second portion or end of the liner panel is releasably fastened to another part of the frame, by a plurality of first elements, which elements fail when an excess pressure is applied to either side of the wall assembly. A first end or portion of the first exterior panel is secured to the one part of the frame, and a second end portion of the first exterior panel is secured to the liner panel, for example, at a location midway between the two parts of the frame. The second exterior panel has a first portion secured to the other part of the frame. A second, end portion of the second exterior panel is releasably fastened to the liner panel or to the first exterior panel by a plurality of second elements, which fail when excess pressure is applied to the assembly. In response to excess pressure, the first and second elements fail. The liner panel and the first exterior panel deflect, while remaining attached to the one part of the frame. The second exterior panel remains attached to the other part of the frame, but becomes detached from the other panels. It also deflects, so that the excess pressure is released and no excessive loads are applied to the frame.
