    • Provided is a storage system comprising a plurality of storage subsystem in which each storage subsystem includes a storage resource and controls access from a host system to the storage resource of the storage subsystem. The storage system is capable of simply and promptly changing the operation of a storage subsystem between operating as a stand-alone system and virtualize the plurality of storage subsystems logically into one virtual storage subsystem and execute a first mode of causing a host system to recognize the virtual storage subsystem. The storage is further able to execute a second mode of causing the host system to recognize the plurality of storage subsystems respectively as separate storage subsystems.

    • The storage control apparatus of the present invention saves a table for managing a virtual volume in a pool and keeps the state of the table in the latest state. A first dynamic mapping table (DMT) that manages a first virtual volume is saved in a first pool. Upon receipt of a write command relating to an unused virtual slot from a write command issuing device, a first virtual volume control unit assigns an unused real slot in the first pool to the virtual slot and updates the first DMT. The first virtual volume control unit discriminates the validity of the received data and, in cases where “0” data are received, releases the assigned real slot, updates the first DMT once again, and discards the received data. In cases where the received data are valid data, de-staging is performed following a DMT update.

    • A storage device is provided with: a first management section that manages a storage area provided by one or more hard disk drives on a basis of a predetermined unit created using one or more parameters; a second management section that manages, on a basis of a pool configured by at least one or more of the units, a management policy about the capacity of the pools and a threshold value of the storage capacity of the pools; a power supply control section that controls each of the hard disk drives of the unit under the management of the first management section to be in either a first turn-ON state or a second turn-ON state with a low power consumption; and a control section that selects, when the storage capacity of any of the pools exceeds the threshold value, the management policy of the pools, and any of the managed parameters considered optimum to serve as the unit of the storage area, and after making the power supply control section to change the state of the hard disk drive of the selected unit from the second turn-ON state to the first turn-ON state, adds the unit of the storage area to the capacity of the pool. With such a configuration, the storage device can achieve reduction of power consumption, simplification of management, and increase of use efficiency of storage resources.
