The receiving device receives a voice channel number, wherein the voice channel number is communicated in an outbound signaling message defined by Motorola's 3600-baud radio trunking protocol. The receiving device tunes to about a transmit frequency of 806.0250 MHz, if the voice channel number is 440; tunes to about a transmit frequency of 806.0500 MHz, if the voice channel number is 441; tunes to about a transmit frequency of 806.0750 MHz, if the voice channel number is 442; etc. The receiving devices tunes to about a receive frequency of 852.5250 MHz, if the voice channel number is 500; tunes to about a receive frequency of 852.5500 MHz, if the voice channel number is 501; tunes to about a receive frequency of 852.5750 MHz, if the voice channel number is 502; etc.

    • A system and method for interrupting a transmitting communication unit in a communication system. When a call is first initiated, the call is assigned to a communication channel and broadcast from a base site using the assigned communication channel. If it is determined that a transmitting communication unit should be interrupted, a zone controller signals a base site to generate an interrupt message. The base site generates an interrupt message containing an identification code for the transmitting communication unit and broadcasts the interrupt message on an outbound link of the communication channel. The transmitting communication unit, while transmitting on an inbound link of the communication channel, continuously monitors the outbound link. If the transmitting communication unit receives, on the outbound link, an interrupt message containing an identification code matching its own identification code, the transmitting communication unit stops transmitting.

    • In a two-way radio frequency (RF) communications system having at least one fixed terminal, one or more channels, and a plurality of subscriber units, the method comprising, a device receives, from a first subscriber unit, an alert tone request identifying at least a type of alert tone and at least one destination. In response, the device causes one or more fixed terminals corresponding to one or more radio sites associated with the destination identified in the alert tone request to instruct their subscriber units to play back a locally stored or generated alert tone corresponding at each subscriber unit. Receiving subscriber units then play back the alert tone on a continuous, periodic, or semi-periodic basis, selectively mixing the alert tone with call audio if present.
