    • This invention provides a technique of reducing temperature rise due to heat generation of polarization control elements. A projector includes: an illumination optical system; an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illumination optical system in response to image information; a projection optical system for projecting modulated light obtained with the electro-optical device and a base frame, formed using material including metal material, for mounting a plurality of optical components arranged on an optical path from the illumination optical system to the projection optical system. At least one of the plurality of optical components is a polarization control component that includes: a polarization control element including organic material for the controlling polarization state of light exiting from the polarization control element; and a light-transmissive member having a thermal conductivity of at least about 0.8 W/(m·K), to which the polarization control element is stuck. The light-transmissive member and the base frame are thermally coupled.

A projector includes an illuminating optical system for emitting illumination light, an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illuminating optical system according to image information, and a projection optical system for projecting a modulated light beam flux obtained by the electro-optical device. The electro-optical device includes a single-crystal sapphire substrate having nearly a rectangular shape, and a polarizer provided on the single-crystal sapphire substrate on at least one side of a light incidence surface and a light emission surface. The single-crystal sapphire substrate includes a c-axis substantially parallel to the surface of the substrate, and the c-axis has an inclination of about 3° to about 7° with respect to a reference side selected from perpendicularly intersecting two sides of the nearly rectangular shape.

    • A projector for separating white light into three primary colors, forming images with liquid crystal light valves, mixing these images, and projecting an enlarged picture of the mixed images with a projection lens. The projector includes an optical unit having a light source, a plurality of dichroic mirrors for separating the white light into blue, green, and red beams, respective liquid crystal light valves forming images of the blue, green, and red colors. The optical unit has a chassis with a rigid center portion at which one of the liquid crystal light valves is mounted, the other two light valves being mounted symmetrically with respect thereto. An adjustment mechanism is provided for matching pixels of the second and third color valves with those of the first color valve. The red color liquid crystal light valve is disposed midway between the blue and green color liquid crystal light valves and a cooling fan is disposed below the red color liquid crystal light valve.

    • Liquid crystal modulation elements are arranged so that light outgoing surfaces thereof face light incident surfaces of a color synthesizing prism. Transparent plates are bonded to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements. For this reason, adhesion of dust to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements can be prevented. Further, it is possible to prevent light reflection at the interface surface between the light outgoing surfaces and air due to the difference in refractive index therebetween. This allows a high-quality image to be projected without deteriorating the switching characteristic of the liquid crystal modulation elements while preventing dust from adhering to the light outgoing surfaces of the liquid crystal modulation elements.
