摘要： Provided is a recording and retrieval apparatus for a multi-layer optical disk. A multi-layer optical disk in which a plurality of recording layers and a single servo layer are combined to form a set is used. A spot for the servo layer and a spot for the recording layers are turned on in a time-sharing manner. Servo signal detection areas are formed discretely in the servo layer. The servo signal detection areas and data recording areas are provided so as not to overlap each other when viewed from the spot incident side. Thus, separation of data from each of the layers can be done by even a single photodetector without interference.

摘要： An optical recording/reproducing method employs a recording laser beam having a first output and a first wavelength, and a reproducing laser beam having a second output lower than the first output and a second wavelength shorter than the first wavelength. A disk-like recording medium is irradiated with the recording and reproducing laser beams by use of an objective lens having an NA of about 0.55 so that a small mark equal to or smaller than about one fourth of a spot size optically defined from the wavelength of the recording laser beam and the NA of the objective lens is formed on the recording medium by a recording characteristic of the recording medium and a shielding plate provided in an optical system for irradiation with the laser beam. Two-dimensional recording is performed as a recording system to arrange marks at lattice points of a two-dimensional lattice which extend in a track direction and a track radius direction. The reproducing system detects a reproduction signal from the mark on the two-dimensional lattice point, and the reproduction signal from each mark is used to perform a signal processing, thereby detecting information.

摘要： Light emitted from a laser is divided into two light waves so that the ratio of the power of one light wave to the power of the other will be appropriate. The resultant light waves are irradiated to the same track on a medium. The preceding spot is used for erasure, and modulated so that the same pattern as the one formed with a recording pulse will be formed. The high-power component of the modulated light of the erasing spot causes the temperature of a recording layer to be equal to or higher than the melting point. The medium-power component of the modulated light forms a crystallizing temperature area on the recording layer. A liquid crystal diffraction grating is used to divide power, and a power division ratio is variable and controllable.

摘要： An optical disk apparatus for correcting astigmatism that influences the read/ write. If there is astigmatism, and auto-focus and tracking control are in operation, then a push-pull signal amplitude and a 2T signal amplitude vary with the variation of an amount of spherical aberration, resulting in two cases. In one case, the amount of spherical aberration to give the maximum value of push-pull signal amplitude agrees with the amount of spherical aberration to give the maximum value of 2T signal amplitude, and in the other case the two amounts do not agree. If there is no astigmatism, two amounts agree each other. If there in no agreement, then correction is made by using an astigmatism correcting element until the agreement is reached between the two. In the case where two amounts agree, specification is made for the existence and angle of astigmatism, and correction is made by using focus error signals from adjacent tracks.
