    • A control apparatus for an automatic transmission is disclosed which has shift valves to which a kickdown pressure, governor pressure corresponding to vehicle velocity and throttle pressure are applied, wherein the shift valves are changed over in dependence upon an equilibrium. The apparatus controls the application of the kickdown pressure to the shift valves. When the transmission speed detected during the kickdown operation is a relatively lower speed and vehicle velocity is rising, the kickdown pressure is applied within a first velocity region (Z1 or Z4) on a lower velocity side of a first vehicle velocity (V.sub.U2I or V.sub.U3I) which is less than an engine overrun point (V.sub.o1 or V.sub.o2); it is not applied within a second velocity region (Z2 or Z5) which is set from the first vehicle velocity to a second vehicle velocity which exceeds the engine overrun point (V.sub.o1 or V.sub.o2); and it is applied within a third velocity region (Z3 or Z6) which exceeds the second vehicle velocity.

    • A throttle valve opening detecting apparatus of an automatic transmission for detecting an angular position or opening of a throttle valve for controlling the amount of air-fuel mixture reaching cylinders of a vehicle engine that includes a throttle valve position sensor for providing an output proportional to an angular position or opening of the throttle valve. A memory device memorizes a minimum value of the output to set a reference output for a closed position of the throttle valve. A renewing device decreasingly renews the reference output when the throttle valve position sensor provides an output smaller than the reference output set in the reference output. The renewing device increasingly renews the reference output when the throttle valve position sensor provides an output larger than the reference output and smaller than a preset reference output for a predetermined or preselected period of time.

    • A shift control system for an automatic transmission has a multiple stage transmission gear mechanism provided with a plurality of shift gear stages of different speed ratios. A shift control device is provided with a plurality of shift patterns for controlling the multiple stage transmission gear mechanism and establishing one of the shift stages, based on a vehicle operating condition, in light of one of the shift patterns. A shift pattern switch device switches from one shift pattern to the other and back to the one shift pattern from the other when a value representing the vehicle operating condition changes beyond a reference value. A frequency detecting device detects when the frequency of change of the vehicle operating condition goes beyond a predetermined value, and a reference value change device changes the reference value based on the frequency of the change of the vehicle operating condition. The shift control can take into account the driving habits of a driver.
