    • An active circuit element substrate is provided with a matrix array of active circuit elements. Each of the active circuit elements includes 1) a switching element, 2) a capacitor, 3) an electrically-conductive portion connecting the switching element and the capacitor, 4) an insulating layer covering the switching element, the capacitor, and the electrically-conductive portion, and 5) a reflective electrode layer connected to the electrically-conductive portion and extending on the insulating layer. The insulating layer has a surface flat so as to agree with a mirror finished surface. The reflective electrode layer extends on the surface of the insulating layer. A transparent common electrode film extends on a surface of a transparent substrate. An optical modulation layer is located between the reflective electrode layers on the active circuit element substrate and the common electrode film on the transparent substrate. A voltage difference is generated between each of the reflective electrode layers and the common electrode film in response to a signal applied to a control terminal of the related switching element, and light incident to the transparent substrate is modulated by the optical modulation layer in response to the voltage difference and is reflected by the related reflective electrode layer. A light shielding layer covers regions between the reflective electrode layers except portions occupied by metal areas of the active circuit elements as viewed along a direction of incidence of the light. The light shielding layer extends in the insulating layer.

    • In a camera provided with a finder and a photographic lens, the focal length of the photographic lens being variable, there is provided a distance measuring device having a pair of optical elements at the front side of the camera, the optical axes of the pair of optical elements being different from the optical axis of the finder, and a line sensor having a pair of image-receiving areas for receiving a pair of images of a photographed object through the pair of optical elements. The respective image-receiving area of the line sensors are selected depending on the focal length of the photographic lens, which corresponds to the range at which an object to be photographed is located. In addition, there is provided an auxiliary light projector for projecting a pattern image to the object to be photographed, the image magnification of which being variable corresponding to the focal length of the photographic lens. Furthermore, the image-receiving areas are divided into a plurality of portions for better measuring the distances of the objects to be photographed, which are located at different depths in a three dimensional field of view.

    • A process for making paper using a substituted succinic anhydride as a sizing agent which has the steps of preparing pulp slurry containing (a) an aqueous dispersion of a substituted succinic anhydride in which a cationic tapioca starch containing at least 0.3 percent by weight of basic nitrogen is added and mixed, and (b) a colloidal silica, and forming a paper sheet to improve the retentions of a fine fiber and a filler in the pulp slurry in the sheet forming step and to largely suppress the operation of decreasing the sizing performance of the substituted succinic anhydride with the colloidal silica (b) added as the retention aid, thereby preparing sheet paper having excellent sizing effect. Thus, the process for making paper can not only remarkably reduce the sizing cost but can also efficiently utilize the fine fiber and the filler in the pulp slurry.
