    • A method and apparatus for counting yarn splicing operations due to normal and abnormal reasons for each of the spindles in an automatic winding machine provided with a plurality of winding spindles each having associated therewith a slub catcher and bobbin replacing means, and an automatic knotting machine circulating past the spindles for carrying out yarn splicing at each of said spindles when necessary. A yarn splicing operation at each spindle is detected by a yarn splicing detecting means including a reed switch associated with each spindle for producing a yarn splicing detecting signal when closed for longer than a predetermined time, and a magnet secured to the automatic knotting machine operates the respective reed switches. Yarn cutting at each spindle is detected by a yarn splicing detecting means including a reed switch associated with each spindle for producing a yarn splicing detecting signal when closed for longer than a predetermined time, and a magnet secured to the automatic knotting machine operates the respective reed switches. Yarn cutting at each spindle is detected by a yarn cutting detecting means which detects the operation of the slub catcher for the spindle and produces a yarn cutting detecting signal. Bobbin replacement is detected by a detecting means which produces a bobbin replacement signal when bobbin discharge occurs simultaneously with the yarn splicing detecting signal. A data processor counts the operations for the respective spindles and compares them for determining the number of splicing operations for the respective spindles due to causes other than spindle replacement and yarn cutting by the slub catchers.

    • A light emitting device includes: a light emitting layer; an n-type contact layer made of a compound provided on the light emitting layer; a composition modulation layer provided on the n-type contact layer; and a transparent electrode provided on the composition modulation layer. The composition modulation layer consists of a plurality of elements which constitute the compound. A composition ratio of one of the plurality of elements is higher in the composition modulation layer than in the compound. Alternatively, the light emitting device includes: a light emitting layer; an n-type contact layer made of a compound provided on the light emitting layer; a metal layer provided on the n-type contact layer; and a transparent electrode provided on the metal layer. The metal layer is made of a metal having a lower work function than the compound.

    • In a sheet overlap detection apparatus, an amplification factor control unit changes the amplification factor of a second amplifier which amplifies the output from a first amplifier which receives the output from an ultrasonic receiver. A first overlap detection monitor output decision unit decides the output from the second amplifier as a sheet overlap detection monitor output when the amplification factor of the second amplifier is adjusted, and the output value of the second amplifier has become almost equal to a first set value while one sheet is sandwiched between an ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver. A second overlap detection monitor output decision unit decides the output from the third amplifier as a sheet overlap detection monitor output when the amplification factor of the second amplifier is adjusted, and the output value of the second amplifier has not become almost equal to the first set value, but the output value of the third amplifier has become almost equal to a second set value while one sheet is sandwiched between the ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver. An overlap detection unit detects, based on the output from the second or third amplifier, overlap of sheets which pass between the ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver.
