The impeller includes an impeller core, and an impeller axial length ratio (Lp/D1) of an axial length Lp of the impeller core to the outer diameter D1 of the torus is in a range between 0.030 to 0.045. The turbine includes a turbine core, and an turbine axial length ratio (Lt/D1) of an axial length Lt of the turbine core to the outer diameter D1 of the torus is in a range between 0.021 to 0.029.

    • A lock-up damper device for a torque converter comprising a piston clutch plate slidable in axial direction and equipped with a friction facing pressed on a front cover and a driven plate interconnected to a turbine in between the front cover and the turbine. The piston clutch plate and the driven plate are coupled to each other, for relative rotation by torsion springs arranged longitudinal in circumferential direction of such plates. The torsion springs are installed at outer and inner peripheral parts of the plates. The torsion springs installed on the inner peripheral part of said plates is in contact at at least their radial outer peripheral, radial inner peripheral and side portions between said radial outer and inner peripheries with a wall of a concave portion formed on the piston clutch plate, and the torsion springs installed on the outer and inner peripheral parts are held by the drive plate secured to the piston clutch plate.

    • In a torque converter, by devising a structure of a stator support mechanism, an axial dimension of a radially inner portion of the torque converter and surroundings thereof is reduced. The torque converter (1) includes a front cover (2), an impeller (3), a turbine (4), a stator (5) that regulates fluid flow from the turbine (4) to the impeller (3), and a stator support mechanism (6) that supports the stator (5) to be rotatable only in one direction relative to a fixed shaft. The stator support mechanism (6) includes an annular retainer (61) arranged on an engine side of a stator hub (52), an annular outer race (64) arranged at a radially inner portion of the stator hub (52), an annular first thrust bearing (66) arranged on a transmission side of the stator hub (52), and an annular second thrust bearing (67) arranged on the engine side of the stator hub (52) and at a radially outer portion of the outer race (64).

    • A stator 6 includes an annular inner shell 11, an annular outer shell 12 and blades 13. The outer shell 12 is arranged radially outside the inner shell 11. The blades 13 are formed between the inner shell 11 and the outer shell 12, and are arranged at a plurality of circumferentially aligned positions, respectively. Each blade 13 extends from the inner shell 11 to the outer shell 12 and thereby couples the outer peripheral portion of the inner shell 11 and the inner peripheral portion of the outer shell 12 together. A rate of change in cross sectional area of the blade changes at a position located radially outside the inner shell 11 at a distance in a range from 1/6 to 1/2 of a distance (r2-r1) between the outer peripheral portion of the inner shell 11 and the inner peripheral portion of the outer shell 12.

    • A stator blade 13 has a blade tip 14, a blade trailing edge 15, a back 16 and a face 17. The blade tip 14 is an edge of the peripheral surface of the stator blade 13 near the turbine. The blade trailing edge 15 is an edge of the peripheral surface of the stator blade 13 near the impeller. The back 16 is a portion of the peripheral surface of the stator blade 13 extending between the blade tip 14 and the blade trailing edge 15 and opposed to the impeller 4, and has a streamline section. The face 17 is a portion of the peripheral surface of the stator blade 13 extending between the blade tip 14 and the blade trailing edge 15 and opposed to the turbine 5, and is formed of a streamline portion 17a and a plane portion 17b located near the blade tip 14. The shape of the stator blade 13 is such that a capacity coefficient (Cf) of a torque converter is lower when a speed ratio (e) is 0, and thereby improving fuel consumption during idling.
