    • A plasma addressed electro-optical display is disclosed which is capable of improving current resistance of discharge electrodes disposed below cover glass to be similar to that of discharge electrodes in an effective frame and which, therefore, is enabled to be free from disconnection the reliability to be improved. The plasma addressed electro-optical display has a plasma cell formed by disposing a thin dielectric plate on a first substrate having a main surface on which a plurality of substantially parallel discharge electrodes are formed in such a manner that a predetermined distance is provided between the first substrate and the thin dielectric plate and by hermetically sealing the periphery of the first substrate and the thin dielectric plate with a sealing portion; and a second substrate disposed on the thin dielectric plate and having electrodes intersecting the discharge electrodes at substantially right angles on an opposite surface thereof in such a manner that an electro-optical material layer is interposed between the thin dielectric plate and the second substrate, wherein barrier ribs for separating the plasma cell are formed on the discharge electrodes apart from the sealing portion, a cover glass layer covering the discharge electrodes is formed in at least a region between the barrier ribs and the sealing portion, and assuming that the thickness of each of the discharge electrodes is t, the width of the same in an effective frame is W.sub.1 and the width of the same below the cover glass is W.sub.2, a predetermined equation is satisfied.

    • A plasma addressed liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first base having plurality of first electrodes arranged substantially in parallel to each other on one principal surface, a second base having plurality of second electrodes arranged substantially in parallel to each other and substantially perpendicular to the first electrodes on the principal surface opposite to the first electrodes on the first base, a dielectric sheet provided between the first and second bases, a liquid crystal layer provided between the first base and the dielectric sheet, a plurality of barriers formed along the second electrodes within a discharge chamber formed between the second base and the dielectric sheet, and a seal member provided in a manner to seal the discharge chamber. In the plasma addressed liquid crystal display apparatus, the spacing between the barriers and the spacing between the barrier positioned nearest to the seal member and the seal member are set to 1.8 mm or less. Thus, in the vacuum evacuation process step and the gas injection process step of the manufacturing process for the plasma addressed liquid crystal display apparatus, the dielectric sheet can be prevented from being cracked or broken. As a result, yield can be improved to greater degree as compared to the conventional apparatus.

    • A plasma addressed liquid crystal display device having a plasma cell and a liquid crystal cell stacked one above the other is manufactured by a method of forming stripe-shaped barrier ribs by printing to a substrate on which a plurality of plasma electrodes are previously formed, filling a temporary reinforcing material between each of the stripe-shaped barrier ribs to bury the periphery of the individual barrier ribs, polishing to planarize a top portion of each of the barrier ribs buried in the reinforcing material, removing the temporary reinforcing material to expose the plasma electrodes and finally joining a dielectric sheet in contact with the planarized top portions of the barrier ribs, to assemble a plasma cell. Barrier ribs formed in the plasma cell of the plasma addressed liquid crystal display device can be polished stably with no worry of destruction.
