    • An ink cartridge placed in an ink jet printer stores cartridge management data containing “ink capacity”, “ink total consumption amount”, and “cartridge identification information”. A host 1 stores host management data containing “ink total consumption amount” and cartridge identification information for each cartridge. The host collates the cartridge management data read by the printer 5 with the host management data stored in the host 1 and determines the precise “ink total consumption amount.” After print processing terminates, the printer calculates the amount of ink consumed in the print (ink consumption amount) and the host updates the “ink total consumption amount” based on the calculated ink consumption amount. The printer updates the “ink total consumption amount” recorded in the cartridge management data to the “ink total consumption amount” updated by the host.

    • In an ink jet printer of the present invention, in order to reduce the manufacturing cost, an inexpensive EEPROM enabling only sequential accesses is applied for storage elements incorporated in a black ink cartridge and a color ink cartridge. The data array of a memory cell included in each of the storage elements mounted on the ink cartridges is determined in such a manner that a second storage area, in which rewritable data, for example, data on remaining quantities of inks in the ink cartridge, are stored, is accessed prior to a first storage area, in which read only data are stored. This configuration enables the rewritable data to be securely written into the second storage area even after a power-off operation. The second storage area has two memory divisions allocated to each ink, that is, a first ink remaining quantity memory division and a second ink remaining quantity memory division. Latest data on the remaining quantity of each ink is alternately written into these two memory divisions. Alternatively, the latest data on the remaining quantity of each ink is written into these two memory divisions in a duplicated manner. Each ink remaining quantity memory division has a write complete flag to determine whether or not a writing operation has been completed normally in the ink remaining quantity memory division. This arrangement enables the remaining quantities of the respective inks to be monitored accurately and continuously.

    • Cost of an ink jet printer is reduced using an EEPROM enabling sequential accesses for storage elements in black and color ink cartridges. The data array of a memory cell of the storage elements is determined so that a second storage area, where rewritable data like data on remaining inks are stored, is accessed before a first storage area where read only data are stored. This way rewritable data can be securely written into the second storage area even after power-off. The second storage area has two memory divisions for each ink. Each memory division has a write complete flag to determine if writing has been completed normally. This enables the remaining quantities of the inks to be monitored accurately and continuously.

    • A printer has a sequential access EEPROM used with storage elements on black and color ink cartridges. Cartridge data such as data concerning inks in the cartridges are stored in the cartridges' storage elements. The addressing format for the cartridges' storage elements differs from that for the EEPROM. The printer's controller converts the storage format of addressing before writing information into the cartridges' storage elements. Data to be written into storage elements are temporarily placed in a RAM on the printer's carriage. The data are then written into storage elements of the black and color cartridges, say, during power-off operation. Signal lines and memory used when writing data into storage elements are identical to signal lines through which print data are transmitted to a print head on the carriage, and the memory where print data are stored. This reduces ink cartridge manufacturing cost and printer size.
