The holding device comprises a pair of opposed jaws movable into an article holding position in engagement with opposite sides of the article or articles. The jaws are provided with latching teeth for releasably latching the jaws after they have been moved to the article holding position. The latching teeth are normally held in an unlatched position to permit movement of the jaws to the article holding position. The holding device further has a locking member for initially moving the latching teeth into a latched position following movement of the jaws to the article holding position, and then moving one of the jaw members relative to the other to apply a clamping pressure to the article or articles.

The safety closure comprises a cup-shaped cap mountable on the mouth and having a projection that is movable between a normal unlatched position in which the projection is free to move in a radial direction and hence does not prevent removal of the cap from the mouth, and a latched position in which the projection is locked in place behind and in alignment with the rim and prevents removal of the cap from the mouth. The surfaces of the projection and rim are preferably shaped to interact and provide a camming action for positively forcing the cap into sealing engagement with the mouth.
