    • A digital data coding/decoding method and apparatus are provided. The coding method includes the steps of representing respective digital data by digits of a predetermined same number, and coding the digital data represented by digits of the same number by a predetermined coding method from the uppermost significant digit sequence to the least significant digit sequence. The method for decoding digital data coded in the order of significance by rating the significance of digits of the digital data, includes the steps of analyzing significance of coded digital data, and decoding the analyzed digital data from upper significant digits to lower significant digits by a predetermined decoding method. Even if some bitstreams are lost or damaged by coding important information first, deterioration in audio quality can be reduced.

    • A scalable audio encoding/decoding method and apparatus are provided. To code an audio signal into layered data streams having a base layer and at least one enhancement layer, the encoding method includes the steps of time/frequency mapping input audio signals and quantizing the spectral data with the same scale factor for each predetermined scalefactor band, and packing the quantized data into bit streams, wherein the bit stream generating step comprises the steps of coding the quantized data corresponding to the base layer, coding the quantized data corresponding to the next enhancement layer of the coded base layer and the remaining quantized data uncoded by a limit in a layer size and belonging to the coded layer, and performing the layer coding step for all enhancement layers to form bit streams. In the base layer coding step, the enhancement layer coding step and the sequential coding step, arithmetic coding is performed using a predetermined probability model in the order of bit sequences from the most significant bit sequence to the least significant bit sequence by representing the side information and quantized data corresponding to a layer to be coded in a predetermined number of bits. The side information contains scale factors and probability model information to be used in arithmetic coding.

    • An audio encoder/decoder adopting a high-speed analysis filtering algorithm is provided. The audio encoder has a mapping unit for classifying a received audio signal according to a frequency band by using the high-speed band analysis filtering algorithm, a psychoacoustic model for assigning bits to each frequency band using psychoacoustic characteristics, a quantizing and encoding unit for quantizing and encoding the mapped signal according to the number of bits assigned to each frequency band, and a frame packing unit for generating a bit stream from a signal output from said quantizing and encoding unit. The audio decoder has a frame unpacking unit for unpacking a signal from a coded and received bit stream, a decoding and inverse-quantizing unit for decoding and inverse-quantizing said quantized signal, and an inverse-mapping unit for time/frequency-inverse-mapping the inverse-quantized signal by using the high-speed band synthesis filtering algorithm.
