    • A method for nonintrusive detection of anomalies in electric machines. A flux coil is positioned external to the motor to obtain magnetic leakage flux measurements, which are transformed to the frequency domain to obtain a flux spectrum. Asymmetry-producing faults, such as turn-to-turn stator winding shorts, produce changes in the amplitudes of individual frequencies and groups of frequencies within a defined slot pass family of frequencies of the flux spectrum. The measured amplitudes of the slot pass family of frequencies are compared to reference and trend data. Significant changes in the slot pass frequency amplitudes indicate the presence of a machine fault or other anomalous condition. Significant changes are determined by comparing individual amplitudes and groups of amplitudes of the slot pass family of frequencies to an absolute or delta threshold value. Alternatively, measured amplitudes of the slot pass frequencies can be statistically compared to trend data previously acquired for the motor to determine when a significant change in the slot pass amplitudes has occurred.

    • A machine condition monitor resides in close proximity to a machine train, such as an AC inductive electric motor coupled to a driven unit such as a centrifugal pump or fan. A plurality of sensing devices are connected to the machine and the machine condition monitor. Machine state and condition parameters sensed by these devices are utilized by the machine condition monitor to derive machine condition values for each component and for the machine train as a whole. These derived condition values are transmitted via an industrial communications network to a control center where they can be trended and monitored. With no particular knowledge of machine analysis techniques or severity of specific machine faults, and no special training, Operators and Production Planners can use the condition values to plan production schedules, adjust process parameters, and request appropriate maintenance action.

    • A method for detecting an event and/or behavior of interest based on monitoring data and selectively storing portions of the monitoring data associated with the event and/or behavior of interest. Preferably, the method includes defining a hierarchy of event and/or behavior types so that the storing of a first behavior/event type is preferred over a second behavior/event type, especially when storing capacity is scarce. A data management apparatus including a logic device and a long-term storage memory apparatus, the logic device for detecting an event and/or behavior of interest based on monitoring data and selectively storing portions of the monitoring data associated with the event and/or behavior of interest on the long-term memory storage apparatus.

    • A method monitors an operational condition of an electric motor, and stores in a memory device general trend, prognostic, diagnostic, and hazardous event information indicative of the motor's operational condition. The method includes the steps of sensing characteristics indicative of the operational condition of the electric motor, such as vibration, temperature, magnetic flux, and the voltages applied to the motor's windings, and generating sensor signals related to the sensed characteristics. Upon the occurrence of a first circumstance, such when measurements of the motor's speed, winding temperature, and voltage, indicate that the motor is operating within its normal load profile, prognostic information is extracted from the sensor signals. The prognostic information provides a profile of the motor's operational condition over time without the influences of fluctuating loads, temperature, and voltage. Upon the occurrence of a second circumstance, such as when the motor's load factor is within a load factor range that is most common for the motor, diagnostic information is extracted from the sensor signals. The diagnostic information indicates the motor's operational condition when it is operating within its most common load zone. Upon occurrence of a third circumstance, such as an indication that the motor is operating abnormally, hazardous event information is extracted from the sensor signals and stored. The hazardous event information indicates the motor's condition at the time that a hazardous event, or fault, occurred. The general trend information is measured and stored at regular intervals to determine short- and long-term operational trends over time.
