    • An electronic document handling system places electronic documents on stacks and “staples” the documents in a stack together. A user selects at least one document and places the selected document(s) onto a stack, The system generates a cover sheet including a table of contents; a title; keywords and/or annotations; and/or controls for: adding or deleting pages or documents from the stack, changing cover sheet contents, and/or controls for “stapling” the stack. An electronic file including the cover sheet data electronically represents a stapled stack. The stack can be secured by encryption with a user or system supplied key or password. The system computes a cryptographic checksum for the stack of documents and affixes the user's or the system's digital signature to the cover sheet. After stapling, the stack or a file representing the stack is stored in a stack database or file structure.

    • A method and apparatus for automatic document classification using text and images. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for automatic document classification based on text and image. A new document is analyzed based on textual content as well as visual appearance. The new document is automatically stored in one or more mirror directories in which the new document would most likely be stored by the user of the device if the new document were placed manually. Determination of the most likely directories is based on an analysis of multiple documents stored by the user in various directories. The mirror directories are components of a mirror directory structure, which is a copy of a pre-existing directory structure, such as the user's hard drive. By storing the new document automatically, the user is relieved of the duty of manually selecting a directory for the new document.

    • A system for restoring images with undefined pixel values at known locations is described. The threshold value and a neighborhood configuration are defined and are used to restore the image. The neighborhood configuration defines a geometric region, typically a fixed number of pixels, surrounding the target pixel. The threshold value specifies a number of pixels in the neighborhood configuration for which pixel values are known. In our system, for each pixel in one of the unknown regions an analysis is performed over the entire area defined by the neighborhood configuration. If the threshold number of pixels within that region is known, then the value of the unknown pixel is calculated. If the threshold value is not achieved, then analysis proceeds to the next pixel location. By continuing the process and reducing the threshold value when necessary or desirable, the complete image can be restored.
